Local Atmosphere at Wake Forest University

C

Not Much to Do

Winston-Salem, NC is a small city that doesn't really have much to offer. The city is basically empty after it gets dark, since there aren't really many attractions to bring students off-campus, other than the occasional parade or farmer's market. Winston-Salem does have some good restaurants that do deserve a visit, and there are a lot of different colleges in the area, such as Winston-Salem State, Salem College, and Forsyth Tech. Within an hour's drive are Duke and High Point, which are pretty fun schools to visit as well. However, unless you know people who go to these schools there isn't much of a reason to go to another campus. All in all, Winston-Salem is a boring city and most students stay on campus on the weekends.

Facilities at Wake Forest University

A

Lots of Money= Good Facilities

The first thing that I noticed about Wake Forest University was how beautiful the campus and its buildings were. As an expensive private institution with connections to the nearby tobacco and meat industries, Wake Forest University has plenty of money to spend on renovation and making state-of-the-art facilities. The library is very large and has won awards and has been recently renovated. The student center (Benson) looks very nice, and has lots of places to study and a decent selection of fast food (and sit-down) restaurants. Wake Forest has recently completed a new dorm (South Hall) and welcome center which are certified as "green" buildings. The most famous building on campus, Wait Chapel, is a huge, beautiful building which is a great venue for musicians and speakers. The facilities on campus are great and are probably one of the greatest attractions for prospective students.

Drug Safety at Wake Forest University

B

School Is Pretty Lenient

Most people just drink at Wake Forest, and alcohol is very easily obtained. In fact, the school built a facility known as the Barn, (which has been placed pretty far from the rest of the campus, so that the noise doesn't bother anyone) mainly dedicated for partying. The university has an amnesty policy for drinking, which means that if someone who is drunk actively seeks help, there won't be significant consequences. In other words, the school doesn't really take drinking all that seriously. As far as drug scene goes, there isn't much more than marijuana and the occasional roofie on campus.

Guys & Girls at Wake Forest University

A

Good Looking Campus

Wake Forest University is a pretty good looking campus. Although it is situated in North Carolina, there are people from all over the country and even the world. However, there are a decent amount of Southerners who have varying levels of Southern accents, which might take getting used to. As far as dress goes, a lot of people dress in Polo and pastels, especially when going to tailgate at football games.

Nightlife at Wake Forest University

B

Go Greek

There isn't really a nightlife off-campus; people don't go to bars or clubs because there aren't any. Frats have parties on Wednesdays and the weekends, and a lot of them are on-campus at their lounges or in houses near campus. Age isn't really a problem, since no one really checks for that at the frat parties. Transportation is lacking for off-campus parties, but there's probably an on-campus alternative. Some people go to the neighboring colleges like Winston-Salem State for parties as well, but that requires transportation.
