81% of students return after their first year. Why do nearly 20% of students decide not to return?

Because they have have experienced what college is and it is enough for them. They also realize how expensive college is after their first year.

Typically it is because of cost, but a lot of the students who leave are looking to pursue music careers. that doesnt usually go very far though unfortunately.

Also a handful of them realize that college is a lot of work, and some people just don't want to deal with it.

What would you recommend for getting involved on campus? Do students have a difficult time adjusting the first 6 months Why?

It is definitely an adjustment process but attending school wide events such as those by the Union Board definitely help.

What sort of advising did you receive in selecting your major?

My general advisor is in the Psych department and was thrilled that I chose psychology. Overall I'd say I chose my major and not much advising was done, to be honest.

Before you declare a major and get a major adviser, you are assigned an Academic Dean. They will go over the classes you plan to take each semester with you and discuss what your overall academic plan is. My dean was very helpful in helping me choose and declare your major, though I've heard others are less helpful.

During my visit students seemed to be in groups that were based on ethnicity? Is this a problem or do students usually mix really well?

It's not a problem at all. I'm Irish, my best friend is Indian. My freshman year roommate, with whom I was very good friends, was Cambodian. The only situation where I've noticed it being a slight problem is with some international students who aren't as fluent in English and as a result tend to befriend other international students from the same country. Overall however it's not an issue.

For most international students, they find that their college experience is a lot more comfortable when they have some friends who are of the same ethnicity/same background. But they still have plenty of friends who are not of the same ethnicity as well; we at Bryn Mawr get along just fine (:

What do you wish you knew before you came to Bryn Mawr?

I wish I knew how expensive it would really be. And it's actually not that easy to get a boyfriend at Haverford or Swarthmore.

What sort of advising did you receive in selecting your major?

You can speak with both your first-year advisor and the extremely helpful faculty at Career Development about selecting your major. Even after you select a major, you can easily change your mind and lots of students do.

Why are so few students graduating in 4 years?

We can all thank Gov. Brown for that. He has slashed the funding for colleges which means the they are cutting classes which means it is harder to get the classes when you need them and it takes longer to graduate

it can be due to the stop on financial aid because the student having so many credits. The student may change their major, and in seeing the amount of time it would take to complete it, would lose hope in finishing them to graduate.

What is the Computer Science major like on campus?

The Computer Science major at USD is very demanding and it is highly recommended that one pursuing this major, minors in a related field. There are many resources on campus that help people with demanding majors such as this one.
