I've just been accepted into the Watauga Global Community for fall 2013; I'm so freakin' excited! Could any current or former Wataugans give me some feedback on your experience in the community?

It's been an awesome experience and a great way to make friends. The classes are way more interesting than a regular English class would be, and you get to do a lot of discussion so it's great if you're very opinionated like I am. The professors are great too. My absolute favorite part is living in the same dorm as the international students.

App State vs. UNC Charlotte Honors Program

Which to choose?

App State honors freshmen live in a newly renovated dorm, and upperclassmen live in a brand new one. These dorms are by far the most convienent in the entire school. They are the closest to the Student Union, the Library, and most of the academic buildings.

ASU is a better environment. It has smaller class sizes so you can ket to know your professors better. And the surroundings are just beautiful. All the hiking, skiing, kayaking, and camping you could want is just minutes from campus.

UNCC is a commuter campus, where most students live at home or go home on the weekends. It's also WAY in the north corner of Charlotte, there's nothing near campus and downtown Charlotte is a 20-minute drive away.

At App, King Street...with all the restaurants, shops, (and bars, if you have time for that as an honors student) are RIGHT next to campus.

Thank you, I'm probably going to enroll at App very soon.

Appalachian State University Weather had a new discussion posted by starrypavement

As someone who prefers warm weather to cold weather, I would like to know if the winter months in Boone can be overbearing.

Although I don't exactly "like" the cold, I can tolerate it to an extent. But can any App students who prefer the warmth tell me if they can stand to live there or if the winter climate in Boone is simply beyond tolerability?

The first snowfall this past season was on October 30th, and the last was on April 4th. Not all winters are this intense, but it definitely gets very cold and snows fairly often.

The cold wasn't as bad as I thought it would be. Having grown up on the coast I was a little worried. As long as you layer up, you'll be fine!

Did you all hear the news? App's football team is reportedly moving to FBS in 2014 (Sun Belt conference). Do you think it's a good move?

Student fees will go up. The only team in the Sun Belt who turned a profit last year was Troy Alabama with $300,000. We have to pay $600,000 in exit fees, not to mention they'll probably have to expand the stadium. We'll get our asses kicked for the first couple of years and we'll never see another national championship. Free student tickets are probably gone. This move also came at the cost of legendary coach Jerry Moore. I wish we would have just moved to a better FCS conference like the CAA.

I think it will get the school more publicity, so yes.

Could any VCUarts students from out-of-state tell me if your experience has been worth the higher tuition? I really, truly want to study art at VCU... but I'm not sure that it's a financially responsible option.

I'm pretty sure that I've decided to go to Appalachian State. But I've listed my major as studio art, which requires a portfolio review. Can I enroll at the university and then send in the portfolio after having already enrolled?

Email them and ask

Hmmm... I hate emailing. But if it's what I have to do, I guess I'll do it.

Yes you can enroll it later, that's what most students do.

Yes, being accepted to your major and being accepted to the university are separate. You're able to attend the university regardless of the result of the portfolio review, and since you can't actually declare a major until you have 30 credit hours you have time.

I got in my second semester of my freshman year (mostly due to laziness), so it's a definite yes. And even if you don't get in the first or second time, they have fundamentals classes in which you can build up on your portfolio. If you have any questions regarding your portfolio I'm pretty sure the people in the art department are more than willing to help. Anyone that I've met along with my professors are absolutely amazing and nice.

How easy is it to get to Uptown Charlotte from UNCC? Are there buses that run between uptown and campus on a regular basis?

There are buses that run through the campus. So it's really easy to take the bus/train. You might not even need a car.

Buses run on campus all dsy making it easy to get to uptown

Are you allowed to apply to multiple residential learning communities? I ask because I am interested in the Watauga Global Community; but, in case I don't get into it, I would like to have another option.

Yes, on the RLC application you can make up to three choices.

Keep in mind that because Watauga is different from a normal RLC, there is also a separate application at wataugaglobal.appstate.edu

I am pretty sure you are allowed to apply to more than one, but I do not know for sure.

Thank you both for responding!

I have just received an email including an invitation to join the Watauga Global Community. Are invitations for this extended only to select applicants, or are these invitations received by almost all App State applicants? Can anyone tell me more about WGC?

I think that the invitations are for select applicants only

If you applied and received an invitation then you probably got in. If not, it was probably an invitation to apply.

@thompsonhn: Yes, I should have called it an invitation to apply, rather than join. I'm just wondering if they actually pick certain applicants to formally contact about applying, or if it is standard procedure to just send them out to everybody.

Just about everyone gets an invitation e-mail, but only 90 freshmen are accepted. The application is in a series of essays. Although everyone can apply, you'll probably know if Watauga is right for you based on the essay questions and info you find on the website (wataugaglobal.appstate.edu) Watauga Global Community lets you complete a lot of your gen-ed requirements (freshman seminar, first and second year English, etc.) in small, discussion and writing based courses rather than lectures. It's also a residential college where you live with the other Watauga students in the Living Learning Center, one of the newer dorms on campus, which is also home to the international students and the Appalachian Educators (formerly Teaching Fellows) program. You can be in any major and still be a Wataugan, Watauga courses on average take up 6 credit hours a semester out of an average courseload of 12-16 hours. Let me know if you have any more questions.

Is 1850 a particularly low SAT score to get into UNC? Because, on all of the graphs I've seen, an 1850 lies in the middle 50%. But I've heard of people from in-state getting rejected with scores of 2000 or even higher.

An 1850 is lower but I wouldn't say its too low especially if you have other things going for you as a student (extracurricular activities, high GPA and class rank, etc).

Also if you are in state that score is fine but you would have a hard time getting in with that out of state

I am in-state, but I am actually looking to transfer as a sophomore from Appalachian State. If, in my first semester at App, I get a 3.8-3.9 GPA, do you think I would be a quality transfer applicant for UNC?

yes

I'm trying to transfer as a sophomore as well. MY SAT was 1860, ACT was 29, and I go to NYU - had a 3.75 this semester (smh, stupid B+) lol. Is that good or :\

I would say a 3.75 from a school as prestigious as NYU is pretty good.

I would say you guys are fine..., considering I am a high school senior, with a gpa of 4.38, 1790 SAT, 26 ACT, and I have been admitted. The highest SAT to get in (that applied) from my school was 1800 so far, and the lowest was in the lower 1600s. You two won't have any problem!
