Durham is a small town, but everything you need is close by. There are restaurants, stores, and a grocery store right in downtown. There is also campus buses that are free for students which go to some of the neighboring towns and make stops at the mall, and in Portsmouth if you want a night on the town. Everything you need is only a short walk or free bus ride away!
