Local Atmosphere at Kenyon College

A-

True College Immersion---Stuck on a Hill

Kenyon College is located on the top of a very picturesque hill, lined with trees and surrounded by nature and farms. It is rare for students to leave this hill (other than for a Wal-Mart run) during the school year. This fosters a very close-knit community between students, faculty, and staff members. The campus bookstore and market are go-to shopping places, while Middleground (a cafe),The Village Inn (a bar/restaurant), and the Gambier Deli (obviously, a deli) are alternative dining options to our one dining hall, Peirce. Because students are quite isolated from the outside world, Kenyon has a plethora of student groups, and our Social Board works all year to provide students with entertainment options on the weekends. While there is definitely a party culture at Kenyon, during the daylight hours you typically find students in class or in their favorite study locations. Overall, I believe that Kenyon's environment is very conducive to both an academic and social atmosphere, and what it lacks in franchise chains (such as the staple Jimmy John's or Chipotle on most other college campuses), it makes up for in small-town charm. However, Kenyon's atmosphere is not for everyone, so I strongly recommend visiting campus before enrolling.

Academics at Kenyon College

A+

It's All About the Professors

Kenyon's professors, in my mind, are second to none. I have not met a professor who is unwilling to meet with students, and more often than not, professors invite students into their homes, out for coffee, or for a walk down middlepath, just to chat. This is why I chose Kenyon, and I have not been disappointed. If you want a college where professors care about individual students, make time to meet with you outside of class, and help you in any way they can to make your college experience your own, then look no further than Kenyon College.

Majors at Kenyon College

N/A

What's So Major About a Major?

At Kenyon, it seems that asking someone's major is more about popular convention than it is to actually determine something about them. It seems that most people at Kenyon kind of fall into their majors, somewhat unexpectedly. I believe this is because Kenyon doesn't offer any "practical" majors, and focuses more on an academic approach than a practical one. Not being an Economics major myself, but having many friends in that field, I have heard that our Econ department is very theoretical, and barely practical. And yet, our Econ majors typically get amazing job offers, probably because of the other abilities Kenyon has taught them. At Kenyon, it really doesn't matter what your major is, because what you are there for is to expand your mind, learn to write like a pro, and most importantly, learn a lot about yourself and your passions along the way.
