Northampton is a great college town. There are several cute coffee shops and thrift stores and of course state street liquor if you don't have a car to get to liquor's 44. The food in town is good and surprisingly varied for such a small town. Veracruzana has good mexican food, Thai Garden for thai, Amanouz has bomb Morrocan and if you are able to spend money Cornucopia provides organic and natural foods. There are quite a few part time work opportunities for students and the town is super cute.
Unfortunately pretty much everything is expensive and there is no supermarket. There is a CVS though for snacks and toiletries. All in all is a great town that gets harder and harder to leave every year.

Drugs Are There
Like any other college drugs and drinking happen. Alcohol and weed are everywhere but there is very low pressure to participate if you are not interested. Students work very hard and sleep very little, many students attempt to use recreational drugs or prescription drugs in a recreational manner, in order to relax. It happens. There is not a lot of support for students who have problems with drugs or alcohol.

Be an Adult
Sometimes you get in trouble sometimes you don't. Public safety is always available when there is an issue, from locking yourself out of your room to the belligerent drunk UMass boy who just wont go home. Basically the college wants you to be an adult and make your own decisions. You only really get in trouble if you get really out of control.
