Health & Safety at Vassar College

A+

Totally Safe

I have never felt unsafe at Vassar. Campus security patrols 24/7 and their main goal is to keep you safe, not to get you in trouble so people are not scared of them, and if they feel scared they will not be hesitant to call campus safety. Campus safety is also very available and they will come pick you up wherever whenever for whatever reason - even if you are in close proximity, but off campus.

Computers at Vassar College

A+

Amazing Technology

Vassar has a printing system called V-Print. I brought a printer to school soon to find out there was virtually no reason to have one, every building (incuding dorms) have at least 1 inudstrial sized printer and printing is included in tuition, it prints fast, and is very reliable. Internet speed is great except for during some periods in the dorms there are some lags but there is wireless internet virtualllly everywhere on campus.

There are computer labs in every dorm and most academic buildings, however, since all teachers request writing assignments typed, I would highly suggest bringing a computer.

Drug Safety at Vassar College

A+

We Like to Party

There is definitely a big "party scene" although there are also a lot of kids who opt not to drink or experiment with drugs. the drugs of choice are alcohol and marijuana. (nothing harder than that usually) The good thing about vassar is there is no peer pressure for those who do choose to abstain from substance use and there is very little policy enforcement for those who choose to use. However, Vassar takes very seriously its safety and encourages calling EMS services whenever you think someone could be in trouble, this is probably an over-used service, but at least everyone feels very safe and you never have to worry about a friend in trouble (the professionals do for you).

Academics at Vassar College

A+

Mind Blowing and Eye Opening

Every day my mind is blown and i grow not only as an academic but as a person. Vassar places a huge emphasis on giving us interesting perspectives in the sense that they have lectures and conferences open to students (multiple ones per week} that are all so diverse and interesting. Last week, Cornel West came to speak (as he had the day after 9/11) about the occupy movement and race in america. People have come to talk about the justice system in the U.S., philosophy, politics, phsyics, education, muslim influence in america, and a plethora of other topics all the time.

Vassar's academic and mind-opening lectures/conferences have helped me grow into a wiser, more passionate individual.

Campus Dining at Vassar College

B+

Mediocre

If you live in the dorms, you are forced to live on the meal plan, but you can choose to what level. (minimum, standard, enhanced, etc) We have 3 dining halls: the ACDC, UPc, and the retreat

UPc is nice because it is open until 2am serving smoothies and other things with meal swipes.

The food does get repetitive, however an aspect of the meal plan is something called "dining bucks" for which you go to the student "grocery store" type side of the retreat and you can use these pseudo dollars to get things like ben and jerrys ice cream pints, chips, really nice salads, greek yogurts, and so so many options of drinks (great for stocking up on chasers)

Campus Strictness at Vassar College

A+

Not Strict at All

You can pretty much get away with anything at Vassar as long as you're respectful and not stupid about it. Even if you get caught with an open container of alcohol, you need 3 strikes to actually get in any sort of formal trouble and getting kicked off campus is extremely hard.

Local Atmosphere at Vassar College

A+

So Close to NYC

Recently, we went with my religion class to go see an event at a famous mosque in nyc. Vassar's close proximity with NYC and easily accessibility to NYC (easy direct train ride) is vastly undervalued. It is amazing.

Also, although Poughkeepsie itself isn't too shabby, it is still a legitimate city with malls, stores, and bars for going out.

Scholarships at Vassar College

A+

Need Blind

Vassar does not consider FA in its admissions decisions, leading to over 70% of Vassar students being on FA.

I had no idea who was and who wasn't on Financial Aid, which was so nice because it creates an egalitarian feel. No one is priveledged in that sense, and Vassar is so generous in giving that basically everyone who gets in can afford going.

Even friends who've had trouble as the school year progressed, the school will change its agreement to accomodate students so they can stay. They really do care and this is a huge part of their committment.

Parking at Vassar College

A

Even Freshman Get Parking

Unlike a lot of colleges, at Vassar Freshman through Seniors are all permitted to have their cars on campus, however, freshman lots are inconvenient.

Seniors have optimal parking right in front of their houses.

Guys & Girls at Vassar College

A

Not as Many Gay Guys as You Would Think

There is no such thing as a typical vassar student.

The theatre kids love football, the athletes "bros" are so nice, which is the perfect combination of very masculine bro plus sensitivity and kindness and smartness

Even the athletes are smart, no one gets in solely based on sports or extra-curricular achievements so everyone is smart and tends to be interesting and stimulating

Relationships are not prominent freshman and sophomore year and much more so in the upperclassman years

Random Hookups are a big part of the culture

there are not as many gays as one would think

overall, it is a very attractive campus

Overall Experience at Vassar College

A+

VASSAR IS AMAZING

I have yet to meet someone who doesn't love this school. Unlike its NESCAC counterparts, Vassar embraces the individual, if there are bros they tend to be nicer bros who are less full of it and more compassionate and communicable to women. Everyone is very liberal which is so nice and accepting. The weekdays open my mind to things i would have never though possible and the weekends are a party haven that allow us to work hard/ play hard.

i never want to leave this place!
