Diversity at Southern Methodist University

B+

Don't Judge a Book by Its ...

I gave SMU a B+ for effort. The school is trying so hard to increase diversity throughout the campus and overcome its terrible stereotype (If you've heard it, you know what I'm talking about. If you haven't heard it, it's irrelevant.) If you are, by any means, diverse: I assure you that you will find a scholarship (if you seek it).

Most students on campus seem the same but are actually quite ... different. For example, there are plenty of students who are 1/2 or 1/4 hispanic or something. You just wouldn't be able to tell. And it shouldn't really matter.

You'll find way more students at SMU who are wary of our stereotype than those who actually embrace it.

We also have all types of student organizations centered around different philosophies, political beliefs, etc.

Campus Strictness at Southern Methodist University

B

Yeah ... OD on Drugs and Participate in Underaged Drinking. but DO NOT. DO NOT Park in the Wrong Spot.

The campus is pretty safe. The university got into a bit of hot water a couple years ago, because some kids overdosed on drugs or something. Frats obviously hold lots of parties. They don't seem to really get in any trouble.

I will say, though, that campus police are OBNOXIOUSLY thorough with parking tickets. If you choose SMU in the end, do yourself a favor and make sure to follow ALL parking rules at ALL times. Don't assume that you won't get caught if you're trying to rush and drop something off for a professor or something. Always keep in mind: Murphy's Law.

Transportation at Southern Methodist University

A

Guys, It's Really Not That Bad ...

There's a tight enough community surrounding SMU that you don't really need a car if you don't have one. Parking's obnoxious anyway. There is also a bus line called the DART (You can get a semester pass for $5). It stops really close to campus. Lots of upperclassmen live across the highway along Mockingbird. They'll walk the whole way or hop on the bus for a bit.

Some people may complain about transportation. But it's just because they don't realize how lucky they are. (I've kind of attended multiple colleges before this one.)

Facilities at Southern Methodist University

A+

So Much More Then Just a Pretty Face

I dunno why everyone thinks our campus is so pretty. I guess it's alright. Very well-manicured lawns and such. To me, though, if SMU was a neighborhood in and of itself ... it'd be a suburb. Everything looks the same ... Where's the character?? I guess the interior's alright. Anyway - do appearances really matter all that much??? (Oh. I guess.)

Dedman's pretty awesome, though. I love our sand volleyball court. Sometimes, when it's warmer, I'll go out there with my homework and mp3 player and pretend I'm studying at the beach ...

And, really, I'm probably just being a pretentious aspiring architect. I guess it's just not my style; It's really shiny. Caruth and Embrey (Engineering buildings) have some pretty awesome computer labs, though. If you have access to a major-specific lab, you probably get free printing (I can't say for all of them). There's always room to study at any of the libraries. And there's always something to do on campus - if you look for it. (We have a pretty kickass art museum, by the way.)

Oh! And we have the best learning center ever~ (It's called ALEC and has time-management workshops, great academic counselors, awesome resources for this with learning disabilities like ADD, a writing center, tutors ... Check it out!)
