Drug Safety at Gustavus Adolphus College

B-

Pot Is Popular

The drug scene at Gustavus has never been very dominant. Quite a few people smoke pot recreationally, which is to be expected, and prescription drugs (Adderall, Vicodin) are more popular than say, cocaine. At parties, there might be people out in a garage or in a basement smoking, and if you care to join, they'll welcome you more often than not. Peer pressure has never been an issue. In the dorms, you're likely to run into some puritanical Lutheran kid who will probably tattle on you, so most campus residents go elsewhere to smoke. All of this aside, drinking is a far more popular activity.

Campus Strictness at Gustavus Adolphus College

C+

Strictness and some Stupidity

A lot of the strictness on campus comes from who your CF (Collegiate Fellow, aka, RA) is, and how much common sense you have. Some CF's are out to bust anybody they think is drinking, and won't hesitate to call Campus Safety. Other CF's rely on common sense. If you're not being disruptive or destructive, they won't bother you. There are different levels of punishment, the lowest being a $25 fine and a meeting with Residential Life. The highest being up to a $300 fine, eviction, and referral to Director of Alcohol and Drug Education, as well as possible referral to the Student Conduct Board. One good thing, the college has a Medical Amnesty Act, basically saying that if you and your friends are drinking, and one your friends gets into a serious medical situation, you won't get into trouble by reporting it and getting your friend help.

Overall Experience at Gustavus Adolphus College

C+

Socially Great, Academically (Depending on What You Study) Meh

As a senior, I've been reflecting a great deal lately on my experience here at Gustavus and have mixed feelings. Socially, it has been wonderful. I've met a fantastic group of friends, and have been given wonderful opportunities that are going to look great on a resume. Academically, if you're studying one of the crowd pleasers (ex. Chemistry, Biology, Comm. Studies, Management, etc.) you're in a great place, and Gustavus will do many things for you. I, on the other hand, am in one of the smallest departments on campus, which has two students (including me), two faculty members, and hardly any presence on campus. The program is kind of a joke, and I'm not being intellectually challenged. If I could do it again, I would have transferred to a bigger (and less expensive) state school.
