Drug Safety at St. Olaf College

A-

Administration Is Proactive in Education and Enforcement

There was an outside speaker during freshman orientation who spoke about her personal experiences of substance abuse and what it cost her. The campus is officially dry, so obviously wild parties are out. People who really want to party go to Carleton across town.

Weather at St. Olaf College

A

Lots of Snow, and It's Gorgeous!

I was looking for tons of snow. Since it's only the second week of September, obviously we don't have any yet, but when I visited in February as a high school student, the campus looked gorgeous. Virtually no motor vehicle traffic is allowed in the main part of campus, so the snow stays pristine, not covered in exhaust and stuff. The dining hall has to buy lots of extra meal trays, since they get borrowed a lot to use for sledding! The really hot weather comes mostly when school isn't in session, but a fan in the dorms is highly recommended just in case. There are two outside webcams on the website, so feel free to check out the weather frequently to see if it's what you'd like.

Overall Experience at St. Olaf College

A+

Absolutely the Best School for Me

The professors are great; they love what they teach and they are super helpful and fun. Some of them put on "Academic Expectations: The Musical" telling new students what to expect, all set to tunes from "The Sound of Music." The campus facilities are beautiful and the food is the best (officially according to some publications). Students and administration are very friendly and helpful. That said, it's not the right place for everyone; if you prefer life on the snarky or kvetchy side, you may find this place cloying. Also if you are strongly atheist this is also not the right place for you. People are very accepting of various religions, but Christianity and Lutheranism are strongly in evidence.

Parking at St. Olaf College

C

Never Enough

I flew from many states away, so parking is not an issue for me. However, for those who have cars on campus, it's a chronic source of frustration. That said, you can get lots of places by shuttle, public bus, bicycle, and even walking. The campus is very proud of its green focus, so in a way, not facilitating the use of private cars is perhaps a good thing.
