Facilities at University of Rochester

A-

Good Facilities for Smaller School

Since the U of R isn't huge, there aren't dozens of libraries or an acre size gym. However, the libraries we do have strive to suit student needs, have excellent staff, and an outstanding selection of resources. Our gym is fairly good, is kept clean and offers some classes and intramurals, though a few more would be nice. Because Eastman is part of the school, there are lots of practice rooms, we have access to practice rooms, and an art gallery, and are pretty close to other activities like an ice rink and the movies for which transportation is provided. More food options would be nice, but what we have is far better than I've seen elsewhere.

Nightlife at University of Rochester

C+

Okay

People here want to achieve a specific goal, and are pretty cutthroat about getting it. If people go to official parties, they're mostly at frats or within the athletic community, and most people go just because they get to drink. For the most part if people want to do stuff, they go out on their own or do stuff at their houses with people they know off campus. There's not great nightlife; for the most part people focus and do their own thing. Frats don't have a great reputation.

Overall Experience at University of Rochester

B

Machiavellian

Going to school here is about being successful at competing. The mentality of those who attend here is well summed up in the phrase, "If you can't make money, who cares?" People are about getting what they want, the academic standards are high, and you'll find students working hard all the time. This is not done for reasons of principle or even because they enjoy something so much as for the sake of achieving some personal end. Professors are accessible, you get a lot of opportunities and the advantage of being able to do almost anything you want, whether it be as a program, research, or your curriculum, and the caliber is high, but while you get a solid education and have a dynamic experience, if you care a lot about ethics, life balance or are looking for a good time, this is probably not the place for you. I'm still deciding, personally, but I'm not entirely sure the benefits justify the financial expense.
