Campus Dining at Smith College

A-

Delicious.... Most of the Time

Smith dining is unique in that all of our food is prepared in-house. We have numerous dining halls that do their best to serve a variation of what another house is serving. The food that is served is typically what one would expect. Sometimes, I've found myself googling what a certain dish is...

Nightlife at Smith College

B-

Indifferent

I feel like the nigh scene in the area isn't exactly a visible aspect of the city. Also, although parties on the Smith campus happen regularly, they tend to be rather uptight and regulated if they're an actual registered party.

Drug Safety at Smith College

A-

Relatively Low-Key

I would say the drug/alcohol scene is relatively low key. There is very little pressure here on campus to engage in activities that may be considered high-risk. With regards to drugs, I would say the drug of choice would probably be marijuana. Also, with regards to alcohol, Smith has implemented an amnesty policy for anyone caught drinking or for someone who wants to report a situation in which someones life may be in jeopardy.

Off-Campus Dining at Smith College

B-

A Bit Pricey for Your Average College Student

Dining options off campus are wonderful. There's a cuisine to please every taste bud. Some places are a bit pricier than others but if you shop around so-to-speak, you'll be able to find some awesome places. If you're craving some breakfast, I would suggest the Green Bean. If you're craving pizza, I would suggest Pizza Amore (directly on Green Street) or Sam's which is right downtown.

Campus Housing at Smith College

A

Not Just a Dorm. a HOME

Smith takes pride in the house communities that each home is known for. We live in houses and not traditional dorms. Houses range from homes built in the 1800's with quaint touches to houses built in the 80's with not as much charm. Regardless of which home is being discussed, every person on this campus typically has an incredible amount of pride for her house. Also, for the price that we pay to live here, we would expect amazing housing and that's what we get.

Weather at Smith College

B

It's New England. What Do You Expect?1

Yes, Smith College is in the heart of Western Massachusetts. This means we get snow. I've always lived in New England so I love the winter months but for students from warmer climates, the colder months here are something to get used to.

Academics at Smith College

A

Catered to My Interests

I'm currently undeclared but I'm considering a major in the study of women and gender (SWAG) with a concentration in archival studies. An all-women's college like Smith is THE place to study SWAG. Also, the archives we have on campus are in the top 3 in the world that deal with women's history. This refers to the Sophia Smith Collection that we have in the archives.

Off-Campus Housing at Smith College

N/A

Not Quite an Option.

I guess you could live off campus but I think you need to provide the college with a really good reason. Living at Smith is what makes the college so special.

Parking at Smith College

D+

Ughhh

Poor parking is always going to be a downside to living in a larger city like Northampton. Parking tickets can be a hassle. Good luck even winning a permit in the lottery.

Scholarships at Smith College

A-

A Bit of a Hassle..

Smith requires all students to fill out the FAFSA and the CSS PROFILE which is kind of a huge hassle. Smith does however guarantee to meet 100% of a students unmet need.

Campus Strictness at Smith College

B

Honor and Judicial Boards

Accountability is, and always will be, something that Smith stresses to its students. If you violate any academic policies, you'll be sent to our honor board which consists of your peers and they will sanction you for your violation. Same goes for certain crimes you commit on campus. You'll be sent to the judicial board.

Inside Scoop at Smith College

AMAZING <3

I'm a true Smithie. The house community, academics, surrounding community, and facilities are what separates Smith from its counterparts. We live in houses, eat in our own homes and enjoy engaging conversations with many like-minded women. Our facilities are amazing. Our gym is designed for women and we have a renowned art museum complete with paintings from world-renowned artists. You can't get much better than Smith.

Could Be More

Around exam times, it would be helpful if there were more computers and printing stations available to students. The campus is pretty much completely wireless which is nice.

Local Atmosphere at Smith College

B-

Nice

Northampton is a nice town to live in. Smith is right in the heart of downtown so you pretty much have almost everything within your fingertips. Sometimes however, I feel it would be nice to be closer to a major city like Boston. Instead, it's over a two car ride to get there.

Athletics at Smith College

C

Athletics?

The athletics department isn't exactly the most visible force on campus but everyone still knows it's there. Our athletic facilities are amazing though. Our gym is designed for women. <3

Transportation at Smith College

A-

Pretty Good.

The PVTA will transport you to the other 4 colleges within the 5 college consortium for free if you show them your college ID. Also, if you need to travel a little further away to places like Boston, there is a Peter Pan bus terminal right downtown.

Facilities at Smith College

Great

We have several libraries on campus that cater to certain departments on campus. Our gym is designed for women and our outdoor fields and indoor track and tennis facility are wonderful. The campus center is also wonderful, especially during the winter time when the fire place is on.

Health & Safety at Smith College

Campus Police Are Wonderful!!

The Campus Police Department here is absolutely wonderful. If you use common sense, you should be fine on campus. There are 79 blue call boxes on campus so you're always in reach of help. Campus Police's response time is under two minutes. The department here wants student to be on a first-name basis with students. They provide many services that aren't offered at many other colleges. They'll go to house tea parties if you ask them to, they offer self defense classes every semester, they'll engraves your laptops and other valuables, and you can set up a time to ride in their cop car and see what it's like to be a campus police officer. Our Campus Police force works for Hampshire and Mount Holyoke college as well. So there's support from two other campuses in the event that something more serious ever happens. The officers on campus have full arresting authority and are certified by the state. My only criticism with regards to feeling safe on campus is the lack of lights around campus. There are several paths that students take to get to various parts of campus that aren't particularly well-lit. Also, despite the fact that there are 79 call boxes on campus, I would feel more comfortable walking on the science quad if there were a few more call boxes in the area. All things considered however, I feel incredibly safe on campus.

Overall Experience at Smith College

A

My Home

I can't imagine being anywhere else. The house communities here at Smith was something I wanted out of my college experience but didn't think existed. Tea parties, individual house traditions, Julia Child Day, and many more traditions are things that I absolutely love about Smith.
