Academic Freedom -- Pitzer's Double Edged Sword

Pitzer is great at allowing the student to take charge of their own education. Whether you want to take upper-division courses as a freshman, create your own major, or even survey a wide variety of introductory courses, your academic career weighs on your own shoulders. This, however, can be a double-edged sword. I find that because of the higher-than-average academic freedom, there is a lack of faculty support in advising. It takes a confident, assertive student to take charge of their education here.

Transparency and Support

The unique quality that separates Pitzer is the close bonds that students form with faculty, staff, and administration. Our faculty and staff are so supportive of the students, they even throw dinners and parties in their own homes with students invited. The president herself along with all the vice presidents cook fry foods and popcorn for the students twice a year during finals weeks. In addition to all the fun, the faculty and staff are also extremely available for support. The professors, vice presidents, and president all hold weekly office hours to meet with students about any issue. Our administration is transparent -- a value that Pitzer places above almost all the rest.

Difficult but Supportive

I find that students first applying for financial aid receive very little support or grace from the financial aid office. I knew a student who was late on turning in the FAFSA by 3 days and was denied aid. I, however, turned in my FAFSA form 2 months late and still received aid because I was re-applying for the 2nd time. Once approved, the office is supportive and open, but it seems to be difficult to cross that threshold.
