Seasonal Depression
Unless you are already accustomed to cloudy, rainy weather on a constant basis, this place will be a shocker for you. The beginning two weeks of classes, and sometimes the last two weeks, are when weather is "nice." We get emails regarding frostbite warnings - that's how cold it gets here. It's painful. They actually warn you in the emails not to be outside for more than 10 minutes. The grey weather really takes a toll on everyone after a while too. You may not realize it right away, but the weather definitely affects your mood, you want to stay in more and it's easy to fall into a sluggish, lazy state. I never had a problem with depression before coming here but the weather has definitely brought out the worst in me. If you are a sun lover, I do not recommend Syracuse for you.

Rampant
Just look at Princeton Review, we rank for drugs, hard alcohol, and beer being prevalent everywhere on this campus. It's true. We have a big party scene here, and there are a handful of bars too. It's easy to go out every night if you want, and even easier if you're in Greek Life since they have events planned for you. You have to be disciplined enough to know your limits though or the scene will ruin you. I know kids who have been to rehab because of the scene here and I know kids that rarely go out and work their butts off instead - it's all about discovering a happy medium that lets you enjoy yourself, but doesn't ruin you and your future. I don't recommend coming here if you don't think you can control yourself.

"Gross Pigs" is an Understatement
The vast majority of guys on this campus are not only bad looking and short (like weirdly short - 5'7-5'9ish), but also incredibly disrespectful, piggish, and stupid. There really is nothing good to say about the vast majority that I have seen here over the last three years. The Daily Orange, the newspaper on campus, even did a story on upperclassmen girls being fed up with the guys here and resigning to the fact that it's better to just go out with your girl friends than to even let a guy cross your mind. If you are one of those girls expecting to leave college with a MRS degree, don't come here unless you are willing to throw your standards out the window.

Depends on Which School You Are In
Newhouse is fantastic, truly great. I switched into Newhouse from another college on campus and it was a world of difference. The professors make themselves available for extra help and are incredibly patient, helpful, and qualified. The course work in all of my classes if relevant and interesting. The Career Development Center is amazing, so helpful in giving you the resources to find internships and jobs. The alumni network is incredible too. I have even had people from home chuckle when I tell them I am at Newhouse and they say "well you won't have a problem finding a job." If you take advantage of the opportunities Newhouse gives you, you will have a very rewarding academic experience. I also would like to say that my coursework for my minor in the college of Arts and Sciences is very interesting as well. If you take charge of your academic experience, you will be rewarded. Don't do something that you don't love - that's why I left my old major and transferred to Newhouse. Probably the best decision I have made on this campus.

Depends
Yes, there is definitely a huge amount of diversity between ethnic groups on this campus. The Chancellor really made that a top priority when she took over, and she is getting alot of flack for it though now. People are accrediting our falling rankings in part to her incentives, thinking she is trying too hard to recruit a wide variety of minorities instead of helping the students already on campus. You would think that that is a beneficial thing for a large institution to be diverse, but it really doesn't do much for our campus. Groups self segregate in a big way, I rarely see interaction between different groups unless necessary for a class or a club or a project. It's a little discouraging, but it is a reality that is just accepted on this campus.

Pros and Cons Both Abundant
"Everything happens for a reason" - my motto of choice to describe my SU experience. I have learned so much during my time at SU. I've had my highest highs and lowest lows during my college experience. I've learned more about living than I ever realized I could learn. If you had told me when I was a senior in high school about everything that would happen to me while I was at college, or because of college, I wouldn't believe you. That's how much college can change you and teach you. I am not the same person that I was when I came to college by any means. I give some of that credit directly to SU but I also think that I would have been shell shocked at other colleges too. The academics at Newhouse are definitely the biggest plus about my time here at SU, that's by far the biggest pro to my experience.
