A New Room Every Year
Where at other schools you may have the option to keep your same dorm room year after year, at Mount Holyoke, every year you enter the housing lottery and wind up in a new place. And since there is practically zero off-campus housing, ALL students participate. It's kinda a big social activity on campus to strategize the best places to live. The houses "on the green" are the prettiest, oldest, and closest to most classes. They are also the smallest and some have few dining options. "uglier" buildings like Ham/Macgreggor look more like typical dorms but have nice features like window-seats and adjoining singles to make your own suites with your friends. They also have their own parking lot which is great if you have a car. Prospect is ugly and small and there is nothing nice about it except that it's by the lake. The Mandells are a FAR walk from classes/library/everything...but the common rooms are beautiful, and you really feel like you live in a glorious old mansion...I would recomend living in a smaller dorm as a firstie to be able to get to know the other new girls easier. As each year past, and I already had my core group of gals, I personally became more concerned with convience and amendities and less about the "look" of the dorm.

Duh..Girls School Mean Girls Only!
If you think that attending a girls school wont hinder your ability to meet boys...then you are sorely mistaken! Most girls were single, or if they had boyfriends, had kept them from high school. It was extreamly difficult for a MHC heterosexual to meet men. There are tons of guys in the pioneer vally...but none of them want to make the trek out of Amherst to South Hadley. So if you want to socialize, be prepared to leave campus EVERY weekend. As far as girls go--if you like 'em, there are plenty to be found. There are also a LOT of girls who "go-gay" for a while simply due to the fact there are no men around. I have more than 1 friend who found themselves as a lesbian after 3 years at MHC, who upon graduating said "well...I guess I DO like guys after all. Huh." The girls on campus? Actually, most of them ARE pretty decent looking---BUT you wouldnt know it mid-week. Since there are no boys, most girls dont wear make-up during the week. They wear PJ's to class, and sometimes dont even brust their hair. However, there are 3 big parties each year-- and EVERY time, I would go in and think "wow--that girl is really pretty!" and then realize it was the same girl I had sat next to in Spanish class all semester. So-- conclusion. Pretty girls, who dont make an effort. We dont make an effort, because there are no boys.

Limited
There are 3 main parking lots, and all are located close to dorms. The problem is they are very small so if you dont get a spot next to YOUR dorm, you are out of luck and will be walking quite a distance. Parking on the weekends is never a problem since so many girls leave campus, but during the week, if you've moved your car, you will be hunting for parking. And there is VERY limited guest parking.

Fall in Love With the PVTA
The Pioneer Vally Transit will become your best friend. They are busses that run between the 5 colleges. Most of what you'll want to do off campus will be in Amherst or in South Hampton, and the buses will take you there will a decent amount of frequency, so for the most part, you are good to go! AND, they are free!!! BUT pay attention to the last bus home--most head back to MHC around 1 or 2 AM, so dont get left stranded at a party. The other big local attractions are the grocery store--you are pretty much out of luck without a car--- and the Holyoke Mall. You can take a greyhound to the mall for around $5. Still pretty inconvienent without your own car. But..it could be worse!
