Academics at Middlebury College

A-

Excellent in Most Departments

I very much enjoyed the courses I took at Middlebury-- especially the sciences. The small class size enabled professors to come up with very tailored labs and many independent project. Other departments, like Chinese, Arabic, Economics, IP&E-- are very strong as well.

Campus Strictness at Middlebury College

B

Hit or Miss

Even after I've graduated, I still can't figure out Midd's pub safe (public safety). They were hardasses at some parties, but then you could schmooze them at the next and get into no trouble at all. Definitely gets easier after freshman year, and no "real" cops are allowed on campus.

Midd does have a reputation for not changing some pretty questionable things, like having no pass/fail options or giving the same credit to a course that is 10 hrs/week versus 3 hrs/week. These rules can get frustrating if they affect you.

Facilities at Middlebury College

A

Cleverly Designed Buildings

With a few exceptions, I was consistently impressed with the foresight that must have gone into building construction. This is especially true for Bicentennial Hall-- the main science building. There are study nooks at every hallway end, with a big, spacious "Great Hall" in the center for a bit of in-between-class socializing. Dining halls are recently renovated, and the buildings are in good shape.

Diversity at Middlebury College

B

Expand Concept of "Diversity", and You'll Be Pleased

When thinking about diversity, you can't just think of race. Middlebury does a wonderful job of accepting students from all parts of the United States (not to mention international students), from different socioeconomic backgrounds, and with different interests. I knew a kid who grew up in a circus, a child television star, and many other people you may not typically encounter. In the end, though, like attracts like. There will always be the predominant group of rich East coast college kids.
