Pretty Safe
Since USD is in a small campus it is easy to feel safe on in it. Public safety does routine rounds around campus at night, and so do RA's on the residence halls. The mayor problem is sporadic theft in residence halls, but that can be avoided by not leaving doors propped open when there is no one in the room

Getting Better
USD is stereotyped by being a school for rich and white students; however there is more diversity than it appears on the school's brochures. The school has many resources to help first generation, minority and low income students, and those resources are growing. Students from different ethnic and lower economic backgrounds will probably feel much more welcomed into the community now than twenty years ago.

As a Freshman, It Is Pretty Strict
I know that I am much more monitored in my residence hall than the juniors and seniors, and much more than my friends who attend public universities. There is a policy that more than six people in a freshman room is considered a party and those are not allowed on freshman housing, but RA's only enforce it if they are being too loud. Some freshman are irrational enough to smoke in their rooms or play drinking games with loud music and obviously get caught and written up.
