Local Atmosphere at Bard College

B

Love the Outdoors

Bard is located in the Hudson valley. Blithewood is surrounded by a a little garden and an immense field, both leading to the Hudson River where one can go canoeing, just to relax, or play ultimate. On-campus as well, there is a museum with student art, which hosts as well, exhibitions by artists such as Frank Benson. PAC is our performing arts center where our president, Leon Bostein, proudly leads his orchestra in performances year-round. Dance and drama performances are, as well, very much liked by the students- who often organize these shows. If you like hiking, and camping, Bard is a good place for you as well. Hikes around the river are not only beautiful, but peaceful as well.

Bard has an athletic department, but the school spirit does not lean much towards these events. rather, towards art performances as explained above.

Tivoli, and Red Hook are two little towns where students reside if they do not live on-campus. There are cafes, restaurants, and boutiques to suit one's needs for civilization, even the population is quite small- and mostly occupied by Bard students.

Academics at Bard College

B

Round, No Boxes

Freshman year at Bard is a year for exploration. Students do not declare their major until the end of Sophomore year. To declare a major, a student has to Moderate in the program she/he wants to attend. There are certain requirements, and they are different for each department. To graduate from Bard, the students have to fulfill credits pertaining to other departments. The philosophy is that one has to be educated in many areas and not be concentrated, and 'trapped in a box'. There is a senior project which starts the summer entering Senior year. It is the thesis which will be present before graduation, and which decides whether the student can graduate.

The professors are approachable, and become your friend. This happens because Bard is a small college and no formalities are needed.

There is the Career Development Department which helps students finding internships, or jobs, and are of great help!

Health & Safety at Bard College

A

Super Safe

Bard is very safe. There has been no crime, nor any dangers. The only people walking around Bard all times are students, and professors. "Strangers" are not often on campus- only when visiting a friend, or if there is a performance. We have campus security who drive around campus, but are not needed for serious issues. The only thing they are in charge is of preventing the students from abusing alcohol, or being too loud.
