BU or NEU for neuroscience?

NEU science departments are really great. You get a TON of job experience. Its typically a lot of work, but everyone in those majors always really loves it.

BU or NEU for neuroscience?

Hey! I am in the same situation haha :) After much investigation, I'd say go for NEU if you're looking for premed or a more science-oriented major. BU indeed offers Neuroscience but apparently only as a Bachelor of Arts, meaning it is more social sciences-oriented. However, both are really good schools, so choose the one that fits your needs the most :) Good luck!

Yes, my biggest conflict was the Bs vs BA degrees! I really had no idea what the difference would mean for my future, but I'm looking at going into research, so I'm leaning more towards NEU. Thanks!

i'm in the same boat too, so far at least :) at this point i'm less concerned with the actual major itself (though it will definitely be neuro) and more concerned with the feel of the school and where i can see myself fitting in for 4 years. i can definitely picture myself at BU more than northeastern.

I was accepted into the College of Science, but not the Honors Program. Is it possible to get into the Honors Program while attending Northeastern?

yes - with a 3.8 or above you can apply as a Freshman - http://www.northeastern.edu/honors/prospective-students/joining-once-you-are-here/

Thank you!!

Are political activism clubs (College Democrats, College Republicans) active on campus? Or does no one really hear about them?

you have to go looking for them and they are rather small. It really is what you make of it here

Thanks, I'm looking to join College Democrats, I was just hoping there weren't any harsh feelings towards those kinds of clubs on campus.

How are freshmen placed in LLC's? Do you get to choose which one you want?

I've been wondering about this too!

you choose your top three when you fill out the survey!:)

But we don't know the "hall" right? Like before we choose the LLC?

no, they change which halls each LLC's are in each year. unfortunately, there is no way to state which hall you prefer- you just get stuck with whichever one your LLC is in

Is it harder to get accepted Regular Decision than Early Action? Northeastern is my number one now and I'm afraid I won't get in for applying RD...

there is no EA.... only regular

^^^WRONG. sry not be that direct but I was just accepted early action along with many of my friends and thousands of others

It is slightly harder to be accepted regular than early action. About 40-45% get in early action, and 30% get in regular. However, the main reason the number is much higher in early action is better applicants. The middle 50% this year for early action was around 1970-2170. Regular should be just as hard score wise, and more difficult in the number they accept. These college prowler admissions figures are dated. This school is much more difficult to be accepted to now

Okay, do you know if they look at both ACT and SAT or just pick the highest one? Because my SAT is in the average but my ACT is more impressive.

From where did you get those numbers? I got in EA too, but I'm pretty sure the acceptance rate was well below 40%...

They look at both ^

Are both SAT and ACT scores considered for admission into the Honors Program, or just the highest one? Asking because my SAT score is within the NU average, but my ACT score is above.

both

I heard that the top 10% of each college are asked to join the Honors Program. Would applying to the College of Science make it more difficult to be admitted to the Honors Program?

I don't think so. They look at your grades and your performance in the first couple semesters and see if you would be a good candidate. I don't think one major has an advantage over the other, it is based on each student's own grades.

But for admittance through your first year application, would it be any harder?

Probably. I think the college you choose does play a large role. Personally, I applied undeclared (no regrets) but I think it hindered my chances of Honors. I don't even think they give Undeclared Honors, but I'm not sure of that. All I know is that when I got my acceptance I was confused as to why I didn't get honors, when my numbers, GPA, and scholarships were on par with and greater than others who did. After research, I realized it was due to my undeclared status. Whatever. I'd rather choose where to live anyway.

I'm from WA and I visited Boston earlier this year to see Northeastern. I'm wondering what the school's reputation is in Boston and the greater Boston area. Is it well respected? Is it one of the more difficult schools in the area to get accepted to? How does it compare to BU?

Northeastern is becoming a very well respected school, it is getting more challenging to get accepted into each year. Personally I find every aspect of Northeastern to be better than BU, more prestige, better social life, nicer campus, and not to mention the best co op program in the country. I dont even see how they can be compared.

I agree Northeastern is already better than Boston, and ten years from now...Northeastern will probably be even more prestigious than it is now.

Northeastern is a great school and has a very high rate of employment after graduation, definitely due in part to the co-op program. BU and Northeastern are generally considered equal in many employers' eyes, just because Northeastern wasn't as always as great of a school as it is now, but people are definitely beginning to recognize how wonderful of a school it is. BU is easier to get into and has more programs and majors / minors, while Northeastern is harder to get into and has the co-op program. Northeastern's Bouve College of Health Sciences is more respected than the equivalent at BU, though, if that helps at all.

Thanks you guys! I'm already excited to hear back from Northeastern about my admissions decision. One last question, do you know how the honors program is like?

I would pick Northeastern over BU for the co-op program and the greater sense of having a campus. BU is spread out for 3 miles along Commonwealth Ave, so you'll have to take the green line trolley quite often. While Northeastern is bordered by Roxbury, the orange line/commuter rail tracks form a "wall" almost. However, you couldn't go wrong with either school. Since you're from Washington, you should definitely consider University of Washington if you don't mind staying in state.

allright

Northeastern is a great school but it does border Roxbury, which is a pretty dangerous area... Just something to take into consideration.

How are dorms? Are there any forced-triples? And how are bathrooms set up?

upper class dorms are nice but extremely expensive. as a freshman there are forced triples. usually there is one bathroom per dorm room up to 5 people sharing one bathroom. freshman dorms have floor bathrooms which are more accessible

Are all freshmen pushed into forced triples, or do some get doubles?

Most are doubles, you can choose an economy option for a triple. I've not heard of anyone being forced into a triple, it's done by choice if you want to pay less. Also, many of the freshman dorms have been recently renovated...they are surprisingly nice for freshman dorms.
