Weather at Washington & Jefferson College

B-

Harsh Weather, Depends on What You Are Used to.

Southwestern Pennsylvania has rainy springs, hot summers, rainy falls, and harsh winters. The campus is small so it isn't really that bad. It takes about ten minutes, maybe 12, to walk all the way across campus. There is a lot of snow and ice in the winter, but if you wear proper footwear, it really shouldn't be a problem. Classes are not cancelled for snow unless it is done individually by professors but most of them live within a few miles of the campus. The campus is a little hilly so the walkways can get a little slippery in the winter.

Recommended purchase: rain boots.

Inside Scoop at Washington & Jefferson College

A+

Language Lab, the Hub, and Lots More!

The Magellan Project is an independent summer research scholarship which gives students the opportunity to go abroad during the summer. The scholarship is almost always in the form of a couple of thousand dollars. The Magellan Project is unique to W&J College. Students can volunteer, do research, or even internships.

The College welcomes the start of new clubs and student organizations with open arms.

There is a shuttle that goes to Pittsburgh on the weekends free for students.

There are tons of computer labs, including Mac labs, everywhere on campus.

My favorite place on campus is probably the Language Lab which has an international Skype booth, satellite international television, Mac computers, Netflix, and some other really awesome features.

The Hub, one of the student centers is a cool place to watch TV, hang out and relax by a fire place. You can also hang out in the Ski Lodge and study on comfortable couches near the double sided fire place while drinking a coffee from the Barista.

Monticello's is a weekend night snack bar in the basement of the Hub which gives away free milkshakes, cookies, soft pretzels, and pizza rolls.

Local Atmosphere at Washington & Jefferson College

B-

Big Town, or Small City?

Compared to my small town Washington has a lot to offer. There are several shopping malls and complexes and there are several very nice malls within a half hour of the College.

There is a farmer's market a block from the campus that offers fresh fruits and vegetables until mid-October that is really nice and student friendly.

There are some nice local restaurants in the area: Upper Crust, a pizza place; Hogfather's, BBQ; Angelo's, a fancy Italian place; Union Grill, a swanky bar/restaurant; Old Mexico, a favorite place for Tex-Mex and margaritas, etc.

There is also a Octoberfest in a near by town.

Campus Housing at Washington & Jefferson College

B

Everyone Lives on Campus

There are a few different options for living on campus, there are regular dorms (double rooms in the Quads) but there are also some newer suites and even apartment style living for upperclassmen women. There are fairly new Greek houses too that offer double and single rooms to members.

Very few of the dorms have full kitchens, even in the upperclassmen residence halls. Cost can be low or high, depending on what you chose. Everything is really close to the campus making it convenient.
