What Diversity?
They have this speech for incoming freshmen. It's given by 4-5 students that together make up a pretty diverse group. From that point on, it will be hard to find a "diverse" group (in the familiar definition of people from several different ethnic groups and cultures) in such large numbers. Walking around campus, you will find a vast majority of white, middle-to-upper class students. Then, several pockets of Asian students may walk by, and sprinkled lightly among everyone will be all the other minorities. Although I (as a member of the majority) do not witness any wrong-doings or discrimination to the minority students here, I can only imagine that it would be initially quite awkward to come to JMU as a minority.

Bachelors of Science
As an Economics major, far less stress is inflicted on you as a BS major than a BBA (College of Business) major. As a BBA, you're required to not only take your normal JMU geneds (which are extensive and unnecessary to begin with), but you will also have to take a number of College of Business (CoB) courses prior to your eventual acceptance into the College. Turns out as a great degree, but for my purposes (since I'm not intending to go directly into business), the BS is a better fit.
The workload thus far (and I'm a sophomore) has been lackluster. As an IB student in high school, I felt more challenged there than here. That being said, once outside of your general education classes, you're free to explore most of your interests.

A Great Escape
JMU is a beautiful campus, set in a valley surrounded by mountains. The scenery is great, as is the on-campus gardening. Night-life downtown is aimed more towards upperclassmen (those over 21), though night-life among students everywhere is lively and adventurous. Can not give the atmosphere an 'A' because of one blaring observation: local attitude towards students. The locals here are largely working class conservative southerners. I say that with no disrespect intended. However, that ideology clashes with the student population and it's easy to see that the locals don't always appreciate our being here. Dirty looks are often seen, particularly if you're a minority.
