A Stepping Stone
The main reason I chose this school is because I had no choice, actually. I didn't do well in high school, so in order for me to continue to a 4-year college/university I first had to improve my GPA. Triton is a great place to start if you need to improve your GPA, or if you're unsure of what career path you want to take. Since it's a community college, it's also a great place to first get all your general courses out of the way and save money, then transfer to complete your major. It's located 5 minutes from me so I am able to save a lot of money by living at home and commuting to school. The reason Triton loses a grade point is because there's not a variety of sports or clubs to choose from. The typical Triton student is simply there to go to class and not much interaction goes on between the students. I guess the only places you can really meet other students with similar interests to you is if you join a sport or club. Other than that, you have all varieties of students in classes ranging from freshman year students to middle-aged adults. However, the class schedules are very convenient. You can take morning, afternoon, or evening classes. All in all, it's a good place to start.

Variety
My school consists of a variety of students. Some are just out of high school and some are in their 60's with grandchildren. All types of people attend Triton since it's a community college. Some are here for career advancement and just working on their general courses so they can transfer to a 4-year college/university. Others are here for recreational classes such as swimming. Mostly everyone lives in the surrounding neighborhoods so I often see people I know or went to school with.

Private Scholarships
I haven't applied for financial aid so I'm not sure how that whole process at Triton should be ranked. What I do know is that if you recieve any outside scholarships they do go through the financial aid and scholarship office and the Triton process can be a bit of a headache. Both times that I've recieved outside scholarships it takes Triton a couple weeks to process that information. One time, it took so long that all my classes got dropped so I had to go to the counseling center and re-enroll. That was inconvenienet considering they didn't have the same classes or schedules anymore. It's also a hassle to get in contact with certain people from the financial aid office.

Community Feel
Since Triton is a community college, the class sizes are much smaller than that of a traditional college or university. This enhances the students' learning ability because it allows teachers to have more one-on-one time with each student. The fact that it's a community college, you're able to interact and meet all sorts of people varying from age range. The facility is very well kept and always clean. Something cool about Triton is that the school often takes trips worldwide, so there's definately travel opportunities for those who are interested. There's a large variety of programs available and even extracurricular classes to take such as dance or yoga.

Safe Inside Stetson Community
I've never felt unsafe at Stetson even while walking alone at night--which only happened once & it was because I was heavily intoxicated. However, I don't recommend doing that (walking alone at night), considering Stetson is an open campus and there are some locals that like to walk through Stetson. Outside of this little bubble, Deland is very poor and there's a lot of crime going on. Public Safety is available & I always had them in my phone ready to dial whenever I wanted a ride from my friend's dorm back to mine, vice versa. P-safe will NOT give rides in the middle of the day unless you're injured. I found this out one time when it was raining HEAVILY & of course I forgot my umbrella, had my laptop in my purse & was wearing the business clothes I would wear to my interview that evening. If I walked to my dorm I would be soaked by the time I went inside plus my laptop would be damaged. P-safe denied giving me a ride. Kinda stupid if you ask me.

Brickhouse
Unless you like sports bars/dive bars, you're gonna hate the nightlife in Deland. Brickhouse is probably the most popular place to be in Deland. All Stetson students go there mostly Thurs, Fri & Sat night. Every other night will be locals & townies. Drinks are cheap here & be sure to try the raspberry margaritas--ask for TJ to make them :) There's also some new "club" on Woodland Blvd called Ace of Clubs & all of Stetson has been going there. Goodcompany is another popular hang for the Stetson kids. Those are basically the three spots people go to. Not much going on here it's pretty miserable. If you wanna go to an actual club you have to make the drive out to Orlando (roughly 45min). Daytona Beach bars/"clubs" I heard are pretty trashy...OH, & for those of you that are under 21, fear not because Deland bars would go out of business if they actually carded anyone. Drink your little hearts out ;)

Looks Are Deceiving
Stetson is a social, pretentious party school. When I first came here for hatter day, I got the impression that Stetson was "the ivy league of the south" as many faculty put it. Faculty had a genuine interest in me and helping me with the transition. Everyone was so nice & friendly. Campus us BEAUTIFUL! It seemed the perfect place for me & I was happy I finally found the perfect school. Life couldn't get any better. The student ambassador (tour guide) told us that Stetson was known as a party school but that it really wasn't. First off, I never heard that Stetson was a party school before I got here (probably because I'm from the Mid-West), but now that I'm here, I'm telling you it is. Monday-Sunday you will find a party going on or something to do. Greek life is HUGE and encouraged. I feel as if Stetson puts more emphasis on socializing than academics. I don't know how people pass their classes with good grades; I guess it's the bureocracy of the greek system. Instructors can see on their roster who's in what frat/sorority & they do participate in favoratism. Say what you will but in the end everyone knows it's true. When I got to Stetson, my perception quickly changed. People are not as friendly as they appear to be during hatter day & actually the friendliness they give out is fakeness. I was having a hard time with the transition process, being home-sick & all. One day I went to speak to my transfer counselor & he didn't seem to be so sympathetic as when we first met (during my campus tour visit the previous semester). In fact, he couldn't wait to get me out of his office. Since Stetson is so small, it's like high school all over again--aka Drama Central. Gossip, backstab & more gossip. People are very pretentious here & put a high importance on physical appearance, socializing & being popular. Just because someone looks pretty on the outside doesn't mean they're pretty on the inside. Keep that in mind next time you go searching for friends on the Stetson campus. Did I mention the quality of education is mediocre? Half of my classes sucked & the teachers could care less about their students & didn't care if you showed up to class or not. I don't feel like going on and on. All in all, I wouldn't have looked twice here if I knew half the things I know now. People have committed suicide on this campus (look it up, there's news articles to prove it). Stetson seems to attract a lot of psychos. I'm so over this place.
