Local Atmosphere at Harvard University

A

Harvard Campus Is Amazing!

The title says it. There's the T so you can leave campus and explore boston, etc. in an inexpensive way. It might seem like a bubble, but if you think that's not the case to some extent with every university, you're only kidding yourself. But really, cambridge and harvard square are great! The clothing stores are kind of expensive and there are a lot of tourists, but you see all walks of life on the streets of cambridge: rich and poor students, business men and women, barbers and chefs smoking during break, the homeless, etc. It's not a bad bubble to be in. Also, there are some really good food places. Pinocchio's Pizza is my favorite late-night food place to go to. Not much selection on chinese food though in the area :(. Tons of universities close by too (Tufts, BU, MIT, etc.) so if you have friends going to those schools, you can totally hang out every weekend if you want! I haven't seen much negative attitudes towards students--maybe a bit from visiting BU girls though. They're just jealous ;). I once got lost looking for a building and went two miles off track and a really nice realtor in a random building I entered to ask for directions was super duper nice. Most shops do offer discounts to students is you ask, I think. Also, there's always performances on Massachusetts ave. from dancers to singers, etc. I love this campus--one of the reasons I chose Harvard!

Facilities at Harvard University

A

Love the Facilities!

*Two great gyms, gyms also in the basement of houses (in Eliot House at least). Not a big gym person (New year's resolution is to become one though--fingers crossed!) but the facilities look pretty great. There's also group classes undergrads can take for free like zumba and indoor cycling, etc. Those, if you can find one to attend regularly, are pretty great.

*Libraries are huge--Widener stacks are legen-wait-for-it-dary. Cabot is great for us sciency ones who want to avoid the Lamont crowd. The studying crowd in Lamont can be pretty intimidating actually. Lamont cafe studying is more laid back--maybe too laid back for my taste. Cabot couches are great for in-between-classes naps! :)

*Plenty of campus activities--Cultural Rhythms is my fave. Ghungroo is awesome too.

*All the Houses have their own cute little special features (like all the pianos in Eliot) and I haven't found a house lawn I didn't like yet. The freshman ivy yard's pretty awesome--miss it and wish I had used it more last year! Anenberg looks like the the Harry Potter d-hall. River Houses have a view of the Charles. The classrooms are nice--only had one classroom I disliked but that was because of the class size and the over-crowdedness in the small room.

*Love the Campus!

Off-Campus Housing at Harvard University

C+

On-Campus Is the Way to Go!

On-campus housing is cheaper and you feel more so a part of the community. I honestly don't know of anyone living off campus, but it can be pretty expensive and difficult to find a place near by. Honestly, i don't think it's worth it, even if you can afford it. On-campus living also makes me feel personally safer.
