College Prowler Take

Maybe it’s Indiana, maybe it’s not, but basketball is the sport that matters at Valpo. On nights when there is a game, you can bet that not much else is happening around campus. A large contingent of the student body makes regular treks over to the ARC to watch Valpo men’s basketball. In the past year or two, the women’s basketball team has been drawing a bigger and bigger crowd on a regular basis. Needless to say, on a night that either squad is playing, you can bet parking will be incredibly scarce. At times, it may seem like basketball is the only sport going on at Valpo, but rest assured, there are other sports if basketball isn’t your cup of tea. An ever-poignant volleyball team is always fun to watch.

Basketball and volleyball are not the only sports available at Valpo. There is the football team, but while decent, they have enormous trouble filling the stands for every home game, except Homecoming. The softball team is continuing to improve on each consecutive year’s success, and in turn, is gaining more of a regular group watching their games. Most of the other Division I sports don’t draw much of a crowd, if one at all. The most passion seeps off the basketball court into intramurals. Intramurals are available to anyone who wants to play, and they are a great way for a large number of students to stay in shape and take a much needed break from studying. Although they dominate much of campus government, the Greeks have their hands full when it comes to competing against you and your dorm squad in an IM floor
hockey game.

Spirit Lacking. Talent Lacking

D

---------------------- Student Involvement In Sports- Our basketball games are pretty well attended, but all of our sports are a joke and everyone knows it. ---------------------- Team Performance- Reliably terrible ---------------------- Fan Support- Well you will find people more supportive than I, but overall the support is little. ---------------------- School Spirit- Ask any student how our school song goes and I guarantee you they won't know it... unless they were a part of freshmen orientation where they lie to you about things such as School Spirit. ---------------------- Athletic Facilities- For non-sports people there is a new workout facility that is completely free AND it isn't half bad (not great though). +0.52 for Valpo. For athletes I have no idea what you get. It's better than what I get. That's all I know. ---------------------- Don't come here for the athletics, and I don't just mean for people in the stands. Potential athletes beware. We really aren't a good place for you to be if you want to go somewhere with your sport.

Our football team is absolutely terrible and has been for some time. We're getting a new coach so hopefully it gets better.

Good for Both Cometitive Sports and IM

B

There is a wide variety of IM sports; leagues are fun for the most part. Campus does not have a huge interest in the school's varsity sports, but soccer for men and women and women's volleyball are our best.

School Spirit

Valpo’s school spirit really shines when it comes to—you guessed it— basketball. The most blatant show of school spirit is the VUCRU—the student cheering section at the games. These students (most of the student body, in fact) dress to the nines in VU apparel and colors, sporting VU temporary tattoos, gold and brown face paint, and even gold wigs. VUCRU sponsors theme nights, so you’ll often see these students with alien antennaes, coconut bras, or cowboy hats. They are loud, obnoxious, and do everything they can to harangue, irritate, and hassle the other team, its coaches, and the refs. Some of the most fun times at Valpo are had in the VUCRU! Tons of students even travel to see out-of-town VU games. One of the most notable instances of this was when students traveled several thousand miles to watch VU play Duke during the 2003–2004 season. You’ll also find school spirit running high during Homecoming and Spring Week when Union Board and Greek organizations put together campus competitions and sponsor campus-wide activities. Most students are proud to wear the brown and gold!

Getting Tickets

Tickets are not generally required for students. Your VU ID card will get you into the games free—even basketball games. Tickets are only required for off-campus sporting events or NCAA interleague games when students get discounted rates. The only tickets that can become hard to get are extra tickets for men’s basketball for friends and relatives. These are not expensive, but can sell out for big games.

Best Place to Take a Walk

On campus—the sidewalks make a great place to run or ride. Off-campus trails include the trails at the Dunes and the Prairie Dogwood bicycle and walking trail.
