Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

If you are looking for diversity and the opportunity to meet and mix with students of different races and ethnicity, Valpo might not be the place for you. The minority population on campus is exactly that—the minority. There are some international students, but they tend to stick together and are further removed from campus. Many live in 807 Mound, which is a housing unit close to the fraternity houses. While there may not be much ethnic diversity on campus, the religious and political diversity is pretty average. Since we are a Lutheran campus, there are obviously a large number of Christians on campus, but there are quite a few students that believe in different religions like Islam.

The University continuously tries to make campus a more diverse place. Approximately 10 percent of the students are from foreign countries, so the numbers are much larger than they seem when you physically walk around campus. New international programs are getting started to help Valpo appeal to many different kinds of students. While there is not an overwhelmingly diverse student population, most students are accepting of all different sorts of beliefs, backgrounds, and status. There is little to no tension among various groups.

What Diversity?

Valparaiso is extremely homogeneous. Most of the population is upper-class, white, straight, and leaning more toward the conservative side politically. We do have some international students, but they tend to socialize among themselves. There could definitely be a lot more diversity here, but I do not see the composition of the school changing anytime soon.

Diversity Lower Than It Looks

I thought it was interesting that in one undergraduate research project, students tended to overestimate the number of people of different races as students and faculty. While there are definitely other races present, the majority of students are white.
