Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

“Average” is the most commonly used word when asking anyone at Valpo about the physical attributes of the opposite sex. There are few good-looking ones wandering around, but there's no promising that they aren’t taken. The good guys are usually taken; the good girls are usually taken. A lot of Valpo students end up finding the loves of their lives here. The variety of the students, however, is pretty strong. There is a good mix of jocks, geeks, creative artists, and average joes living on campus. Unfortunately, once you feel like you've exhausted all of the options on campus, you are pretty much done until college is over. It is much harder to meet people off campus and from other schools than if you click with someone that goes to Valpo as well, but it is possible.

The social scene is what you make of it. There are plenty of activities to get involved in, or you can just choose to stay in your room and watch movies with friends. There's a decent mix of people who choose to go out and who choose to stay in. There are always fraternity or house parties on the weekend, but Valpo is a dry campus, so be careful when coming back. Other than that, there are always things to do in Chicago for date nights and weekends.

Good, Everyone Is Friendly

I really like the people at Valpo. There's a general good quality to the student population. The small school atmosphere allows you to be friends with a good portion of the school, if you be social and go to parties and stuff.

Facts

Social Scene

Students at Valpo tend to be very outgoing and involved. Most students are members of multiple clubs or organizations. Valpo students are pretty supportive of on-campus activities; plays and concerts generally sell out, and the Union Board events (free movies, trips, guest entertainers) are always popular. Students also like to go to neighboring Merrillville to shop at the mall or go to the movies in one of the larger theaters. Most Valpo kids have traveled to Chicago at one time or another during their years at VU. Students tend to do these things in groups. They also attend fraternity events and parties in droves.

Hookups or Relationships?

Fraternity parties result in your average number of hookups, but many Valpo students seem to gravitate toward serious and long-term relationships. Some get married while still in school; many get married following graduation.

Dress Code

The dress code varies with the individual and the day of the week. There is no mandatory dress code. You might see someone in his or her Sunday best walking next to someone in their pajamas, and they'll both be headed to the same class. Whether you wear your pajamas everyday, dress up, or maintain something in between is completely up to you. You'll see punk or goth styles occasionally, but it's much more common to see Valpo students who look like they've just stepped out of a Gap commercial. Preppy.
