Getting a Parking Permit

Freshmen may obtain permits if they live 500 or more miles from Valpo, or if they have an off-campus job. Resident permits (sophomores and juniors) are available to any and all upperclassmen. Senior parking permits are available only to those students with senior class standing, and allow those students to park in resident or commuter parking areas. Commuter permits are available to any and all enrolled students who live off campus, including fraternity members.

College Prowler Take

Parking constitutes a problem across campus. It is possible to find open parking spaces outside the dorms, but the ease of this has become more complicated in the past few years. VUPD is in charge of issuing parking passes and ticketing, but officers have admitted that VUPD does not limit the number of passes based on the number of parking spaces available to students.

In theory, it’s easy to get a parking pass at Valpo, but it’s not always easy to park. If students walk in requesting a parking sticker and has money in hand, they will return to their car with a sticker, but no guarantee that they will find an appropriate spot. This has been a point of contention among students in the past few years, because as much as students want the ability to get a parking sticker, they also want to be able to easily find a spot relatively close to their dorm. Depending on the time of day and the day of the week, spots are easier or harder to find.

Cars Are Nice, but Not Necessary

B

First of all, freshman are not allowed to have cars unless they live more than 500 miles away. Everything is fairly close to campus and I survived my freshman year without a car. Now, they have a city bus that will take students to Walmart and Target for shopping. A parking permit costs $100 which I thought was high until I found out some of my friends at other schools pay $300-600. There is a good number of parking spaces on campus, but it is only close to the dorms. It is hard to park close to the Union or the Athletic Recreation Center. However, everything on campus is walkable so there is no need for a car.

Valpo Is a "Walking" Campus

C+

Valpo has tried to become a more pedestrian friendly campus as of late. That, in turn, makes having a vehicle somewhat difficult. Parking around buildings for classes is limited. Most parking is a little bit of a walk from classes. Parking lots are typically taken over during sporting events by fans. There is only one parking garage, but there are plans for more in the future.

Freshmen Can't Drive

B

Unless you live over 500 miles away or have an off-campus job, freshmen can't drive, but there isn't much need for a car on our campus. You can walk to Wal-mart or Target if needed, and you can always take the V-line, which is a bus service into town. There is a parking garage on campus, and I believe a permit costs $100 a year.

Parking is ridiculous

F

This is the absolute worst aspect of Valpo. The policies regarding parking are ridiculous, with many empty parking lots being reserved for people who don't use them. Parking tickets seem to be all that the campus police are capable of doing. Permits are far too expensive for the limited areas available for parking as well.

Parking Is Ok, but Could Be Better

B+

There are a couple of places to park on campus, but they aren't really that close together so if one is full it takes some time to get to the next one. Unless you're going off campus or are a commuter, its just as easy to walk. Things aren't that far apart.
