Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

There is not much public transportation in Valpo, but campus transportation is much easier anyways. The V-Line will pick up students around campus and bring them to set spots around the city free of charge. The destinations include Wal-Mart, Target, the movie theater, the train station, and downtown. The Student Escort Service drives around and picks students up at any spot around campus, even the frat houses. One van goes off campus into the surrounding areas where many apartments are located. If you want a ride from one building to another, and want to make sure the van actually stops for you to get in, just dial L.A.I.D. on your phone. It runs from 6 p.m. to 2 a.m. and will take you anywhere within a 2-mile radius of campus.

Campus is small enough that during the day, transportation systems like buses available at state schools aren’t needed. You can easily walk from one end of campus to the other in 15–20 minutes. Downtown Valparaiso is accessible by walking 20 minutes, and once you’re downtown, everything is spread across three or four blocks. Only if you need to get to the north end of town or to neighboring Merrillville does a ride or a car becomes necessary. Freshmen are not typically allowed cars, so make friends with an upperclassman if you ever need a ride. If you break your leg or something of the sort, the Valparaiso University Police Department can take you to class if necessary.

I Drive Myself

I'm not sure of the public transportation as I'm allowed my own car. I commute to school everyday, so I'm never without the convenience of my own transportation. From what I've heard, though, the VU line is fairly decent about getting you where you need to go when you need to go.

Buses Are an Option

We have a bus system but it is not ideal for all students. It does not go everywhere and it does not run in the summer.
