Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

The most common thing students complain about on campus is the weather. The mild fall and spring seasons are often forgotten as soon as winter kicks in. Because Valpo is only about twenty miles from Lake Michigan, most people blame the sometimes unpredictable weather on the lake effect. There are years where it is still in the fifties in December, but after break it is consistently freezing.

Snow piles up quickly in the winter months, but the plows on campus work pretty well to make all the classes accessible, so do not expect them to cancel. All the snow that the Midwest gets is manageable, but the worst part about the weather is most arguably the wind. In comparison to Valparaiso, Chicago does not seem like the windy city. Here there are perfect pathways that make the blistering cold wind blow straight into your face on the way to class and on the way back.

No matter how bad the weather gets, students get used to it. Classes do not get cancelled unless the professor cannot get on campus, which sometimes makes it difficult for commuter students. Just make sure you pack a scarf, gloves, and a warm winter jacket. Most often jeans and a sweatershirt are all that is needed. Valpo rains an insane amount and usually it lasts all day, so rainboots are the most necessary footwear to bring. Umbrellas always break because of the wind, so you may need to invest in a raincoat as well. Also, be prepared for the warm weeks in the beginning and end of the year by bringing a swimsuit and flip flops to go to the beach (it's only twenty minutes away!).

Very Snowy!

It snows a ton here in Valpo, yet classes are never canceled. This is really hard on me, as I commute to school and the roads are not always in good condition. Also, it's a far walk from class to class, usually, and I don't like driving from building to building. When it's not snowing, it's bitter cold in the winter. It's nice walking in the summer, though.
