It goes without saying that an institution like Vanderbilt will boast a tremendous faculty, since teachers are truly at the heart of any high level university. What makes Vanderbilt so special is the interaction between faculty and students, a criterion where Vandy is an anomaly (in the absolute best sense of the word).
As a research university, the offerings are unlimited, and between all the departments and post-graduate schools, there is ample opportunity for a student to fully explore any discipline he or she so chooses. Combine this with a reasonably small student body and a fabulous student-to-teacher ratio, and you have a learning environment in which undergrads are treated like upper-division students from the moment they step on Vandy’s campus their freshman year.

The faculty at Vandy have enough brainpower to melt steel, and most of them expect a lot from us. Sometimes, I think they forget that they’re teaching an introductory course, and expect us to perform like graduate students, but it justifies our feelings of superiority over other schools. |

I took mainly psychology and English classes, and I liked most of my professors. They expect a lot of work, but they’re very approachable. |

Ninety-five percent of the classes taught at Vanderbilt are taught by full-time faculty, meaning you are really getting your money’s worth. Class offerings are truly diverse, and they are taught by accredited minds in their respective fields. |

The best advice I’ve gotten on teachers is that if you find a teacher you like, take another class with them no matter what it is. Just take it, because it’s the teacher that makes the difference. Now I just have classes with the ones I like and relate to and it makes class so much easier. |

Some teachers are really tough;...
Some teachers are really tough; some are more down-to-earth. It all depends on whom you get for which class. Classes are usually pretty small, but intro classes can get pretty big. You’ll find that, even if you have a teaching assistant (TA) instructing your lab or discussion group, the actual professor still isn’t too hard to find. |

Vanderbilt takes pride in its honest grades; you won’t find runaway grade inflation here. Unlike the 92% of Harvard grads that graduated with honors, if you graduate from Vandy with honors, it will be a significant distinction.
