College Prowler Take
Vanderbilt athletics, at times, seems to be the target of ridicule within the SEC. A lot of this has to do with the size of the student body—even if every single Vanderbilt student and grad student showed up, we couldn’t fill our own basketball arena. Compare this to the big state schools of the SEC, which are several times bigger and have tons of alumni within 20 minutes of their school. There are some of us, however, that take pride in our football team despite its poor showing. Nearly 100 percent of our football players graduated, and none of our programs have ever been on probation. In contrast to some other schools that have scandals and controversial issues, Vanderbilt has steared clear of cheating or other questionable activities. Many students though, would be satisfied having their alma mater remain the loveable and respectable underdog.

School spirit is booming, and our women’s teams are all pretty awesome. |

We always have hope. Every year we believe that it will be the year our football team gets it together—they usually play well for the first couple of games. Unfortunately, as the year sours, there is a pretty big fan attrition rate. |

Girls’ basketball is pretty big because the team is actually good. The football team generally sucks. The boys’ basketball team is usually okay. |

Vandy football has been weak the past few years, but people do go to the games. Home games are free if you pick up your pass at the beginning of the year. Lots of people dress up to go; it’s a big frat date event. IM sports are a big deal. They have lots of IM tournaments. Your hall can do it, or a group of friends can do it. The Greek houses will also compete. It’s fun. |

There are so many kids at Vandy who were great athletes in high school but aren’t quite good enough to compete in the SEC. Similarly, there are a lot of sports that don’t exist at the varsity level that do exist at the club level, so if there’s something you want to play, you’ll be able to play it at a pretty high level. |

Gyms and Facilities
- Curry Tennis Center - Tennis rarely, if ever, gets better than this. The Curry Center is a newer facility that has hosted the women’s NCAA tournament regionals in the past. Take into account that there are four indoor and 12 outdoor courts, plus fact that the facility includes cameras on every court, a conference room and both visiting and home locker rooms, and you will see that the Curry Center is the pinnacle for the avid tennis player.
- Memorial Gymnasium - With a seating capacity of almost 15,000, Memorial Gym, home of Vanderbilt basketball, is a simply gorgeous building. With a polished maple floor and locker rooms that were built less than 10 years ago, the Memorial gym is a building that would make anyone proud to play basketball at Vanderbilt. With the stadium’s raised playing surface—front row spectators are eye-level with the floor—and unique placement of the team benches at the ends of the gym, Vanderbilt teams enjoy an extremely unique home-court advantage.
- Student Recreation Center - The Rec includes weight rooms, an indoor track, four squash courts, four racquetball courts, three basketball/volleyball courts, one outdoor basketball court, an aerobics room, and an aikido room. The Student Recreation Center is where the majority of students go in order to maintain that prized appearance that has become a staple of life at Vanderbilt. No matter what you like to do, there is something to tickle your fancy at the Rec Center, whether it is swimming, lifting weights, running, or simply watching the big-screen TV, the Rec Center has what you need.

Most Overlooked Teams
Baseball, golf, and tennis are all underrated at Vandy. While they don’t draw many fans, Vanderbilt consistently excels at the ‘country club sports.’ Both of our tennis and golf teams have placed nationally and consistently rank among the top in the SEC, which is the best and most competitive conference for these sports. The Vanderbilt baseball team has a new stadium and has competed very strongly in SEC play in recent years.
Best Place to Take a Walk
Enjoy the indoor or outdoor tracks, stroll around the 330 acres that Vandy’s sits on, or simply walk on over to beautiful Centennial Park, just across West End Avenue from main campus.
