Freshmen Required to Live on Campus

Yes - All freshmen are required to live on Peabody as a part of the Commons Experience

College Prowler Take

Most Vanderbilt students are required to live on campus for their entire college careers. With the advent of The Commons, the residential living and learning community for all first-year students, all freshmen (as well as a faculty member in each building) live together in the recently built or renovated dorms on Peabody. All freshmen are now assigned doubles in the same part of campus, so there are no discrepancies or advantages between the buildings.

While the freshmen are pampered in their dorms on Peabody, the rest of the student body is, for the most part, left to fend for themselves with what’s left. In particular, the sophomores and juniors get the raw end of the deal, living in what was the original freshman housing: Branscomb, if you are lucky; Vandy-Barnard; and in the worst case, Kissam, a housing assignment that has been adopted into the Vanderbilt vernacular as “Kisslammed.” Not many seniors are granted off-campus housing, but luckily there is not a real need for it. Since Vanderbilt housing works on a seniority-based point system, as a senior, you will have no trouble receiving the housing you desire.

Take all this with a grain of salt: With the implementation of the Commons, freshmen live like kings but are brought back down to reality when they are forced to live in Kissam the next year. If you are a lucky sophomore, you will get to live in Branscomb quad.

Kissam Quad is quite far from the fraternity row and the gym, but it’s close to classes. I lived in Kissam and loved it. I like having my own room, but the hall is small, so you feel close to others on your hall. Vandy/Barnard is the nicest dorm, but the singles are tiny. Brandscomb is where the doubles are; people love to live there because it’s the party dorm.

My freshman dorm was tiny. I lived in Branscomb and loved it. As a sophomore, I lived in North hall (all girls), and I also loved that! I don’t think you can go wrong—no matter where you live, you learn to make the best of it and have a blast.
