College Prowler Take

It is undeniable that the Greeks play a major role at Vanderbilt. A lot of people are frustrated with this and like to come down on the Greeks and call them sheep or people who buy friends. It is easy to be negative about the Greek system because it is so prevalent, but because all the parties are open to everyone and there is an honest sense of inclusion, the Greeks provide a really good service to the community in planning and organizing parties and events that everyone else can benefit from (even if they’re not in a house).

The pressure to join a fraternity or sorority is definitely there. Obviously, a large part of being in a fraternity or sorority is bringing in the next class of people. As a result, the Greeks are really inviting to freshmen and do their best to recruit them into joining their specific house. While the Greek system does provide you with a good group of close friends, it is important to realize that after you get settled into a house (or decide not to rush), you’ll likely be hanging out with the same group of friends anyway. Classifications aren’t as big a deal as you once thought.

One major stereotype of Vanderbilt...

One major stereotype of Vanderbilt is that the Greek scene dominates the social life. Many students are not Greek. However, the Greek scene does provide a great option for everyone in weekend activities. There is always a fraternity party open to the Vanderbilt community. That, along with the fact that the houses are nonresidential, keeps the Greeks from becoming the elitists they tend to be at other colleges.

The guys have a really cool rush system, which lasts all first semester freshman year and basically consists of going to parties and meeting the brothers. The girls can’t talk to sorority girls all first semester because of some stupid rule, and their rush is about a week long right after winter break. Every Vandygirl hates rush, but no one ever speaks out against the tradition.

Greek life is at the top of nearly every freshman’s agenda. The guys basically sacrifice a semester of sleep, grades, food, friends, and dignity if they decide to pledge, but the girls are the hardcore ones. All first semester, they work on their appearance for sorority rush, which takes place right after winter break. For Vandygirls, sorority rush is the most important thing in life at the time—more important than food—literally!

I’m Greek, though I didn’t plan to be. Yes, it dominates the social scene, but many people would like to say that it doesn’t. I wish there was more to do on the weekends—frat parties get so old. I also have a couple best friends that aren’t Greek. They still go to weekend frat parties.?

About 30 percent of Vandy men, and 50 percent of Vandy girls rush first semester—there’s definitely pressure to go Greek freshman year. However, numbers are down and University policy has been making it harder. It’s still a Greek school with social hierarchies, but one can enjoy themselves and not be a part of any of it.
