College Prowler Take
Vanderbilt is very safe in that there isn’t a great deal of crime in spite of its urban location. However, many students feel that the community is more vulnerable to serious incidents than the often joked about string of indecent exposure offenses.
Truth be told, the main campus is very poorly lit. It would be a challenge for anyone to spot an emergency blue phone while standing at another one—they are too few and far between. This mixed with the general naiveté of the student body is troubling. With the establishment of the Commons on a more remote portion of campus, freshmen in particular are now more than ever prone to long walks alone at night. However, Vanderbilt and its police force are very well equipped to handle any problems—and the statistics back them up. But, it might make more sense and be beneficial if they’d spend more time patrolling the walkways and entrances of campus.

Campus is totally safe. You’ll never have a problem. We get e-mails any time anything happens on campus, and usually the only thing that happens is indecent exposure. |

VUPD is awesome. Once, I got a ride home late at night and talked about doughnuts with the officer. Their presence makes me feel safer on campus and just outside of campus. However, they also allow the students to enjoy their college experience. |

We are close to downtown, but the school is in its own little bubble. I have never once felt unsafe on campus. I actually walk from my dorm to the gym at night by myself, all the while feeling safe. We also have our own police department on campus that will answer immediately to any emergency. They will also provide escorts if you ever feel unsafe to walk to your destination. |

I think security on campus is great, but that may be because I’m a male. I could really understand how girls would be scared to walk around campus, especially the walk between Peabody and main campus. |

Maybe it’s because the student newspaper has blown it out of proportion, but I feel like crime in the Vanderbilt community has risen. Sometimes, I doubt whether VUPD can be effective addressing something other than minor parking violations. |
