College Prowler Take
You may spot a students sporting a T-shirt with the slogan: “Vassar Football, undefeated since 1861.” As Vassar doesn’t actually have a football team, the T-shirt is a good indication of how most students perceive varsity sports. Vassar sports hardly draw spectators. Nevertheless, there are a significant number of varsity athletes. Most sports receive top-notch equipment and resources to travel and compete. Teams go on training trips around the country and abroad. The facilities available to teams and the entire Vassar community are far beyond those available on the campuses of most liberal arts colleges. Athletes at Vassar are scholar-athletes. Practices are scheduled so that students don’t miss class. Coaches are flexible and aware of academic priorities. Students have to balance demanding course loads with hectic practice and competition schedules. Students don’t receive athletic scholarships, so the ones that make the commitment really love it. For those who don’t want to commit, there are various intramural sports available, which often get greater participation and draw larger crowds. Any student can take advantage of the Walker Field House Athletic & Fitness Center. There are dance, yoga, and marital arts classes offered. Students also take advantage of the grassy campus and fields, which are great for pick-up games.

Intramural sports aren’t taken too seriously, but winning an ‘IM Champions’ T-shirt is a badge of honor which anyone is happy to wear. |

A lot participate in IM sports, but it’s just looked at as a way to relax and have a good time—nothing too serious or competitive. Varsity sport? What’s that? |

Varsity sports are not terribly popular—rugby and basketball top the list. |

Vassar is not all that...
Vassar is not all that sportive—there are several teams, but the real spirit lies in the IMs. Many more people participate in the intramural sports. So far as the sports go, it is mainly those who play varsity who support other varsity teams. The apathy for sports and the lack of Vassar sports spirit makes it hard for varsity teams to feel like they are really representing Vassar. |

Sports are increasingly becoming visible on campus. Jocks seem to be growing out of the gutters of Walker Field House. Intramurals also have their fans, especially ultimate Frisbee. |

- Athletic and Fitness Center, Walker Field House - By far one of the best sports facilities of any liberal arts college, Walker serves as the main athletic facility on campus, and includes both Walker Field House and the 53,000-square-foot building addition completed in October 2000. The new athletic and fitness facility includes a wood floor gym, an elevated running track, a multi-purpose room for dance and aerobics classes, a laundry/uniform room, and greenhouse-like fitness room containing top-notch cardiovascular equipment such as treadmills and stationary bikes, free weights, and machine weights. Walker Field House also has five tennis courts, two basketball courts, two volleyball courts, a 25-meter, six-lane pool with a separate diving well, locker rooms, and a sports medicine facility.
- Golf Course - Nine-hole, par 34 golf course that is available to the Vassar community.
- Kenyon Hall - Kenyon, built in 1932 but recently renovated, houses six international squash courts and two North American courts, dance studios, locker rooms, a training room, and laundry/uniform/equipment area.
