Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

Drug use is an accepted recreation among Vassar students, and regulations and policies regarding it are fairly lax. For a first offense of possession of marijuana or paraphernalia, a student receives five hours of community service and a sanctioned education class. This rarely discourages students, but at the same time, many don’t do drugs and feel little pressure to. You will encounter drugs on a regular basis at Vassar. Cigarette smokers abound at Vassar. Your dorm hall will probably reek of beer and weed. Wellness hallways are available in the dorms, but they don’t guarantee an absolutely drug-free environment. For those students who do not wish to be part of the party/drug scene or take a break from it, most of the activities on campus draw more sober crowds.

Some students experiment with “study drugs” or abuse prescription drugs, but few students partake in heavy drug use. Vassar does have a Drug & Alcohol Education Committee to educate students about inappropriate drug use, and for students with drug addictions, there are counselors available. Vassar also has 24-hour crisis response. Most students have a work hard, play hard mentality. Few let drugs consume their time at Vassar.

We Like to Party

There is definitely a big "party scene" although there are also a lot of kids who opt not to drink or experiment with drugs. the drugs of choice are alcohol and marijuana. (nothing harder than that usually) The good thing about vassar is there is no peer pressure for those who do choose to abstain from substance use and there is very little policy enforcement for those who choose to use. However, Vassar takes very seriously its safety and encourages calling EMS services whenever you think someone could be in trouble, this is probably an over-used service, but at least everyone feels very safe and you never have to worry about a friend in trouble (the professionals do for you).

Most Kids Drink but If You Don't No One Cares

Alcohol is easily to get even if you're underage. About 4/5ths of the student population drinks. Some people just have a few drinks and others get wasted every weekend. People hardly ever get in trouble for drinking; as long as you don't go overboard you'll be fine. Pot is less popular, but most people have at least tried it. If you don't drink or smoke no one will pressure you into it or judge you for it.

Lax for the Most Part

Vassar treats its students with respect. They expect us to be responsible. Other than the girl (who dealt drugs) that lived next to me, I don't know anyone got in trouble for anything. If you get caught you get educated, its a good system.
