Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

If you ask the average Vassar student to differentiate between Delta Kappa Epsilon and Chi Omega—unless the student is a classics major—he or she will probably just laugh. Greek life has never been a part of the Vassar social scene, and many prospective students choose Vassar for just this reason. The absence of Greek life on campus is very representative of the non-exclusive nature of Vassar social life. There is no loss of keg parties at Vassar; after all, it was founded by a brewer. But students in senior housing and in the dorms often throw open parties that draw crowds from all corners of the Vassar community. There are no lists to get on, freshmen are welcome, and alcohol is free.

Overall, most students are rather proud of the fact that Vassar doesn’t have Greek life. Students feel like they can make their own friends through whatever pathway they choose: their dorm, student organizations, sports teams, or just being an active member of all-campus social events. Vassar is a better place because a Greek system has no part of it.

No Greek Life

Vassar got rid of Greek life ages ago because the college felt it was interfering both with academics and in creating a community within the student body. (Who'da thunk it?) Most people here like that there're no frats. It means all parties are open to everybody and everyone's really chill.

Luckily, Non-Existent!

I think one of the things I most like about Vassar is the absence of a Greek system. I think the general student body wouldn't be receptive towards that kind of thing, but it also sets the atmosphere for a more integrated, open campus.
