The Vassar social scene is driven by off-campus parties. The Town Houses and Terrace Apartments have parties every weekend. Large crowds of underclassmen can be seen trekking out in the late evening to dance and drink. Dorms also sponsor events, which mostly underclassmen attend. On-campus events are usually dry, with occasional parties providing alcohol for students over 21. These parties are usually a warm-up for whatever is going on at the Town Houses or Terrace Apartments. There are both campus acts and touring bands that come here. Students go to dance, drink, and mingle in the Mug or in friends’ dorm rooms, usually after other events have finished on the weekends or for the themed ‘80s or live jazz nights during the week.

There’s always a line to get in Matthews Mug and the Alumni House Pub are both very popular, but at times, the Pub is restricted to seniors only. However, it is not hard for those students under 21 to have a good time. The campus bar admits everyone and has different music themes every day of the week. Students love to play drinking games—knowing the rules of beer pong and flip cup is required. Campus parties aren’t lame, and most agree that there isn’t a reason to leave campus to party. Vassar also has a student-run entertainment committee called ViCE, which holds several parties a year and brings performers to campus.

There is some sweet stuff that goes on during the week. Jazz night, which generally features a jazz-influenced fusion band from New York City, happens every Tuesday. NoVice brings in some type of alternative rock act every week, too. It's fun if you don't have too much work.

There isn’t much for clubs and bars off campus which I know. There is the Dutch Cabin, a bar that runs a karaoke every Tuesday night, which is popular among the upperclassmen. Every weekend, there is some sort of party on campus with a theme, ranging from ‘Heaven and Hell’ to ‘80s nights. There are parties every weekend in the TAs and THs, mostly consisting of a keg and crowds of people hanging out. And lastly, Matthews Mug, our on-campus bar and club, is bouncing every night.

The Mug is a super popular club/bar on campus, though I’ve never actually been. (I swear, I’m not a loser!) As for off campus, we don’t really go to any bars or clubs in Po-town.

Most parties are on campus,...

Most parties are on campus, especially since almost everyone lives on campus. The senior housing (TAs and THs) each have their own style, and sometimes they are really fun with bands. There are also, sometimes, dorm parties. A lot of people just hang out in smaller groups in dorms or drift around. The Dutch is pretty much the only off-campus bar that people go to. The Mug can be fun if you like dancing. I like Vassar’s party scene because everyone parties together—without Greek life, with seniors living on campus, and with students of many different years mixed up in the dorms, you can meet lots of people in different grades.

The student-thrown parties (in dorms and houses) are great if you are looking for a chill get together, but there aren’t too many huge frat-boy keggers. Most Vassar students like it that way. The parties thrown by the dorms can be fun if you want a little crazier night, but can get old after a few years. The Mug is great for a good time or just if you want to dance, but is a little too sketchy for some and can get old after a few years, as well.

Facts

Club Crawler

Poughkeepsie is not a very hopping city, and there are very few clubs off campus.

Bar Prowler

There are very few bars, and what is available is rarely frequented by Vassar students. Most students go to dorm and organization sponsored parties, house or dorm room parties, and the following is a list of on- and off-campus places that students frequent.

Organization Parties

Campus parties at Vassar aren’t lame. Various organizations and dorms host parties in dorms, the College Center, and on the Quad in nice weather. Everyone is welcome at these parties, and there is no fee to enter. There is always a good DJ, free food, and often alcohol for those over 21. Vassar also has a student run entertainment committee called ViCE, which holds several parties a year and brings musical and non-musical performers to campus.

Dating back to the 1930s, “the Dutch” has been everything from a teahouse to a restaurant to its current state as an eatery and bar. A Vassar favorite, there is no cover charge and drink specials. You can also grab the mic in your state of inebriation for karaoke nights on Tuesdays.

Located across the street from campus, more students dine here than hit up its bar scene; a top place to bring your parents when they visit, as the meals here are quite pricey. It does offer an upscale bar with limited seating and live entertainment, mainly bluegrass and jazz persuasions.

Very few students go to bars which would require one to be 21. Even the campus bar admits everyone and lets only the 21-year-olds drink. It is not difficult to have a good time when you are underage.
