College Prowler Take

While Poughkeepsie isn’t exactly New York when it comes to eating out, it has its fair share of good restaurants. Most students eat their meals on campus, but occasionally take the much-needed break from ACDC to venture off campus. With the Culinary Institute of America within 15 minutes of Vassar, many of the chefs who populate area restaurants are top in their profession. There is a good assortment of restaurant styles within walking distance of Vassar, including Chinese, American, Italian, Japanese, Vietnamese, Mexican, and Middle Eastern. The restaurants are, for the most part, inexpensive and surprisingly good.

The Farmer’s Market on Thursdays across the street from campus also offers a variety of fresh fruits and vegetables for students to cook with. If you have access to a car, the possibilities of eating out are endless. Students often pile into cars and to go to restaurants in Poughkeepsie and the nearby towns of Hyde Park and New Paltz. For the more lazy and hungry among us, Napoli’s Pizza is a student favorite for delivery. There are many pizzerias, Chinese restaurants, and delis that deliver to Vassar through the night. Late-night, after-party take out is a regular weekend activity.

I’m content. If you have a car, you have more choice. There are a lot of restaurants run by CIA graduates around, each a tasty delight. And of course, the pizza and Chinese delivery until all hours at night is wonderful. Make sure you try a slice of Napoli’s pizza and a plate of stuffed french toast at Babycakes.

It is imperative to eat off campus if you want to maintain gastronomical sanity while at Vassar. Although no restaurant near campus rocks my world, there is a large variety of cuisine. For Vietnamese, I go to Saigon Café instead of Miss Saigon (both on same street). I go to Julie’s every Saturday for chocolate chip pancakes, and occasionally go to Babycakes for coffee and cookies. There are no good Chinese restaurants. If you have a car you may want to venture to the Eveready Diner 10 minutes away, but it’s not open all night, as you would assume by the name. Haymaker’s is an overrated and expensive restaurant off campus; don’t go there. The 24-hour diner, the Acropolis, is awful. And try to go to Janet’s Jerk Chicken Shack at least once during your Vassar years. Eat the chicken with your fingers by the river. Ahh.

There are good restaurants accessible by foot and car. The Beech Tree has superior dinner offerings. The CIA is a 10-minute drive and worth the trip.

There are several really good restaurants off campus. My favorite is Miss Saigon, a Vietnamese restaurant that does amazing things with tofu (or meat if you’re so inclined). Babycakes is a bakery/cafe with a Culinary Institute of America trained owner; it’s a great spot for brunch on weekends.

Right off campus, there’s the Dutch which has a good bar and excellent Mexican food. If you have a car, suburban America is at your fingertips with major fast food and family-style restaurants no further than 20 minutes.
