Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

Student parking at Vassar is relatively simple. All students, including freshmen, are permitted to have cars. All cars must be registered, but it is free. Students are prohibited from parking in the main part of campus on weekdays between 7 a.m. and 6 p.m., which causes much grumbling among students, especially in winter. Freshmen are not permitted to park on campus at any time, and have to park in the farthest lot. There is a large parking lot (South Lot) on the edge of campus with ample spots in which upperclassmen can park. Although students complain about trekking up the slight hill to South Lot, it’s not that bad. After dark, there is a shuttle bus that drives students to the lot from a number of campus locations three times an hour.

About 40 percent of students have cars on campus, but you can easily live without one. Many places are within walking distance, and a shuttle runs to other places on the weekends. For academic fieldwork, students have access to a Vassar-owned car to get around. Most students have a friend with a car. As much of the social life at Vassar is mainly grounded on campus, having a car is not a necessity to have fun. Having a car can expand your possibilities of exploring the Hudson River Valley.

Even Freshman Get Parking

Unlike a lot of colleges, at Vassar Freshman through Seniors are all permitted to have their cars on campus, however, freshman lots are inconvenient.

Seniors have optimal parking right in front of their houses.

Horrible!

It's really nice to have a car on campus, as it is rather isolated. To get anywhere otherwise, you'd have to take a cab. Parking is pretty cheap - $60/semester. However, there is only one designated lot for students, which is a fifteen minute walk from the heart of campus. It's pretty bothersome, especially if you're walking back to your dorm from the parking lot at night. Not really safe.

Anywhere on campus

After receiving three parking tickets, registered cars will be banned from parking on campus for the remainder of the academic year. Any further violation will result in a $50 fine plus the cost of the parking ticket, and the vehicle will be placed on a tow list. If found on campus again, the vehicle will be towed at the owner’s expense.
