College Prowler Take
Public transportation within Poughkeepsie is relatively nonexistent. Most students shell out the cash for taxi (usually about $5–$10 to most places within Poughkeepsie) if they can’t bum a ride in a friend’s car. Transportation out of Poughkeepsie is strangely easy, however. Vassar is within a few hours of the major airports in the New York City area. Stewart Newburgh is smaller and has fewer flights, but is much closer to campus. Airports are accessed easily by rail, airport shuttles, and taxis. The Poughkeepsie train station is a large hub which provides Metro North and Amtrak service. One of Poughkeepsie’s greatest features is that it is the most northern stop on the Metro-North Railroad, which runs along the Hudson River down to Grand Central Station in New York City. The ride on Metro-North is about an hour and 45 minutes and far cheaper than what it costs to ride the more expensive trains, like Amtrak, which is the only option for much of the rest of upstate New York. To go other places, students can try to find rides offered by students on the Ride Board in the College Center.

Nonexistent, but most people don’t leave the campus and anything you’d need is within walking distance. Also, there is a direct train from Poughkeepsie to NYC, which is fairly convenient. |

There is a bus around town, although I do not know anyone who rides it. What is most common is to call a taxi or find a ride to the train station and hop a train to NYC for the day or weekend. |

Oh man. You really have to try hard with public transportation. There are two public bus lines running, but you’ll have to look up the schedule yourself. No one is really sure where the bus stops are. You may as well get a bike, or find a friend with a car. |
