College Prowler Take

Almost all of Villanova is wireless, but some of the older buildings and residence halls still use cables. The service tends to be poor and unreliable in these buildings, but it's pretty fast and reliable everywhere else on campus.

Villanova pre-purchases laptops for incoming freshmen. These are typically used by all students, and some classes—mostly business classes—require students to use programs specific to their Villanova-provided laptop. At the close of sophomore year, students trade in their laptops for a brand new one that they get to keep. All in all, it's a pretty good program, but some students still opt to bring their own laptop or Macbook. Villanova students also have a printing allowance per semester, which is an ample amount, and most students don't exceed it.

You can bring your own computer, but you don’t need it. And you definitely don’t need your own printer, because there are many facilities on campus you can use for free printing.

The computer network is really great here. Every dorm has Internet connections, as do many of the classrooms, and several computer labs are available to students. I would, however, bring my own computer to Villanova for ease.

Villanova provides many opportunities to keep up with the advancing high-tech age. They offer many deals for purchasing your own laptop through the University if you do not already own a computer, and they have a fabulous computer support center that is always ready to answer questions and fix problems on a walk-in basis.

No one uses the computer labs, so if you need to, you’ll be fine. The network isn’t that bad either. We get the occasional virus, or the Web site might be down for a couple of hours, but besides that, there’s nothing to worry about.

With my laptop, I never really need to use the computer labs, unless it is to go to the print center. The computer labs are pretty easily accessible, and they are not crowded. Bringing your own computer is definitely what needs to be done, though. I have not heard of any laptop thefts, so you should get a laptop if possible.
