College Prowler Take

Students searching for an Animal House or Old School fraternity are looking in the wrong place. Villanova Greek life is treated like any other club or organization on campus. Greek rivalries are nonexistent, and most Greeks have friends in and outside their fraternities and sororities. Greek life offers a great way to meet new people and form close relationships and get involved in philanthropy work. Most spend a couple weekends helping out the underprivileged or raising money for charities, as well as fun events.

However, if it’s the party scene you are interested in, Villanova’s Greek life makes only a small dent. Due to the lack of on-campus Greek housing, most only throw parties on occasion. For popular events, they will rent out a club or bar and charge a small cover. Sororities tend to revolve around formals or cocktail-type events. Many parties off campus are usually broken up by the police within an hour or two, not to mention that none are in walking distance. While Greek life at Villanova offers a great way to meet new people, it is hardly treated any differently than most clubs and organizations, even by the Greeks themselves.

Greek life on campus is in a sorry state. The University is extremely strict on the on-campus fraternities. More students prefer ‘off-campus,’ or ‘underground’ frats, which don’t heed to the University. Connection to frats and sororities are important to freshmen in order to find off-campus parties, but later on, they lose importance.

You Control Your Level of Involvement

B+

Most of the involved students on Campus are members of Greek life. However there is not a large amount of pressure to join a Greek organization. Most Greeks balance their relationships well with non-greek friends. This may have to do with the lack of Greek Houses. So people remain good friends with their DDormmates

Greek life is popular, but it definitely does not dominate the social scene. There is a lot you can do and experience without joining a fraternity or sorority.

Greek life can seem like a big part of Villanova, but it is really what you make it out to be. The frats are really open to anyone coming to the functions, and the sororities definitely do not separate themselves from the rest of campus.

There is absolutely no Greek housing on campus, which provides an atmosphere where sororities and fraternities do not dominate. The people who are in these groups are involved in many other activities and really mix in with the rest of the Villanova community. They are great groups to get involved with, as they all support philanthropies, as well as hold countless social events to get to know other students, but they are not exclusive.
