Best Time to Look for a Place
Anytime. There’s a lot of off campus housing available but note that desired locations—like the Courts on Montgomery Avenue—go much more quickly than other locations. However, it’s never difficult to find housing.

College Prowler Take
There are a lot of places to choose from in the nearby area, but the only problem is finding one in time. And remember, with the freedom of off-campus living comes bills and commuting. While Villanova is home to two rail lines and three train stations, getting to school can be a pain—it isn’t in walking distance, and transportation can get expensive. A popular place to live is the Courts in nearby Bryn Mawr, but the wait to get in is backed up several years. Problems aside, living off campus provides loads of freedom and proves to be a fun and memorable experience. It’s not too hard to find a place, and Residence Life helps ease the transition to living on your own. At the beginning of each semester, Res Life posts housing opportunities and a checklist of things to look for when inspecting housing. Houses that are entirely rented out to college students sometimes have backyards, which offer more freedom and room to move around. Make sure the apartment or house fits what you are looking for, and make sure it’s suitable for living and the prices are fair. Get a feel for the neighborhood before choosing a place because some residents are not big fans of college students and will be quick to call the cops at any sign of a party, and the cops are even less friendly to college students.

Finding off-campus housing is a bit of a hassle, plus you isolate yourself from student life. I wouldn’t recommend living off campus until you have to. |

Many students choose to live off...
Many students choose to live off campus, and there are many great houses and apartments in the area. It often works out to be cheaper to share rent with a few friends off campus and make your own meals rather than pay for housing and a meal plan on campus. Personally, though, I think the junior apartments on West campus are great and so convenient. I wouldn't want to pass up living in them. Senior year, pretty much everyone lives off campus.

Most seniors are not offered...
Most seniors are not offered on-campus housing, so the market for off-campus apartments is large. Some juniors and very few sophomores opt to live off campus, as well. Radnor Township requires landlords to file for approval to rent to students, and these student approvals are somewhat rare. Additionally, the town mandates that no more than two unrelated students may live together. These ordinances are terribly inconvenient, but most landlords are willing to rent to larger groups under the table. In fact, the majority of seniors live in groups of more than two.

Villanova does not guarantee...
Villanova does not guarantee senior housing. So many people do live off campus that it is convenient to find an apartment and a roommate. It is worth living off campus your senior year, and most juniors enjoy the apartments on West Campus. |

Sophomore year everyone lives on...
Sophomore year everyone lives on Main Campus, and it is quite convenient. I have one friend who is living off campus next year with a few junior friends, but pretty much everyone lives on campus. It’s not worth the hassle, given the fact that most sophomores live on campus. Some juniors live off if they don’t get to live in the apartments, and all seniors live off campus. |
