Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

The men’s basketball team at VCU is the one that students immediately recognize as the favorite. There is no football team, and basketball is truly our one competitive and nationally recognized sport. The team beat Duke University in the first round of the 2007 NCAA tournament, and while some schools may think of this as an insignificant event, it launched VCU’s basketball program into the national spotlight and sparked a greater fan base among VCU students. Attending the games is free for students, and the arena is almost always full every game.

If playing sports is more your thing, there are a ton of intramural opportunities for students to get involved in. Flag football, basketball, and soccer are student favorites. Teams are either same-sex or coed, and divisions are determined according to students’ skill levels. Dodgeball is also a growing intramural activity, ending its season with a major tournament. Intramural sports are fun but are also highly competitive among teams. Often a team that forms during a student’s freshman year continues until graduation. Being on an intramural team is a great way to get physical activity, socialize, and meet new people. And if you don’t like to play sports, it’s just as fun to watch and cheer on your friends!

VCU Basketball Runs the Campus

The VCU men's basketball team is pretty good. The stands are always filled with students and, if you're walking around campus, you will almost always see at least two or three people wearing shirts having to do with the basketball team.

School Spirit

VCU Basketball made history for reaching the Final Four one year ago. I remember the streets around campus being packed with students going wild and celebrating VCU's victory. Ever since then VCU students have more school spirit. This win has made us proud of how far our basketball team can go. Nobody believed that we had gotten this far but we did. I still remember cheering "VCU! VCU!"

Field hockey, men’s and women’s track and field/cross country, and men’s golf.

School Spirit

VCU’s school spirit grows as our athletic programs take top honors and we receive high honors for academic achievements. Most students have some sort of VCU apparel, and it’s common to see the VCU sticker on cars on and around campus. VCU’s win over Duke in the 2007 NCAA tournament truly put a spark in students and even the administration when they made Nike the official apparel sponsor. However, our school spirit pales in comparison to the other universities in the state.

Getting Tickets

Students can get into any VCU sporting event for free as long as they present their student ID.

Best Place to Take a Walk

Byrd Park, Maymont Park, Monument Avenue (Franklin Street)
