Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

VCU has six freshman dorms and seven apartment-style dorms for upperclassmen. There is no requirement to live on campus as a freshman. A lottery system is used to pick which students get a place on campus after their freshman year. Space is generally limited, especially for girls, and it is often hard to get a spot. The older freshman dorms, such as Johnson and Rhoads, are two- or three-person rooms with communal bathrooms. The newer freshman dorm, Brandt Hall, is suite-style with bathrooms shared between each set of rooms. The upperclassman dorms are apartment-style for two or four people. They have full-size kitchens and washers and dryers, and rooms are fully furnished.

Living in the dorms is a great way to meet people. Often you find that classmates live in the same dorm as you, and it is convenient to work on class projects together. Resident advisors keep an eye on students to make sure they’re on the right path, as well as to make sure they’re having the best experience they can. Freshman RAs tend to get students on each floor together for brief meetings to let them know of upcoming activities and help them get to know everyone with some icebreaker games.

Campus Housing

The better options for housing are Rhoads and Brandt if you're a freshman. Brandt is the best, then Rhoads, then Johnson is the worst. If you're in honors, you have the chance to live in West Grace which has a large single with your own bathroom. The social atmosphere of dorming is great if you're living in Rhoads. The cost of dorms are pretty decent I guess, Brandt costs the most because its the nicest. Its convenient to live in the dorms because classes and dining are so close by.

Choose Carefully

Certain dorms are popular amongst certain types of people, although that's true most of the campus. If you stay near the Monroe Park campus, there should be plenty of options for food and other amenities. There are plenty of restaurants near the dorm residences for the students.

It is pretty amazing as dorms go. I have two levels, a kitchen, a living room, only three other roommates and one bathroom to share.
