Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

Students coming to VCU know in advance that it makes the most sense to buy and set up their computer before arriving
on campus. The debates over computers between students are usually about desktop vs. laptop and Mac vs. PC. Most
students would say having a laptop allows for greater flexibility, and laptops especially come in handy when working
on group projects in various settings or when you need to work on the road. As far as whether you should get a Mac
or a PC, it truly depends on your major. There are Mac labs available around campus in some of the departments for
students to use, and there are a few Macs in the library.

VCU’s campus, including most academic buildings, the student center, the library, and the dining hall, has wireless network access. All you need to log on is your e-ID and password, which are the same as your e-mail. This creates a secure connection in an urban environment. It is a huge benefit to be able to take your computer to class and look up information or view slides posted online by the professor. Be careful, though, of the distractions that a computer may cause in class. People who use their computers in class may not be just taking notes but surfing the web, chatting online to their friends or writing e-mails. Because of these reasons, some teachers won’t allow the use of laptops in class.

VCU has a huge amount of computers available to sudents in the library however on days you need them their is still no open computers. Also it is convenient that we have wifi all over campus however every time we want to use it we have to log in our user name and password. At times the internet does not work at all.

Personal Security

Personal computers are the way to go. VCU has a program that if you buy a PC from them they will be able to fix any problem while you are a student at the college and will give you a loaner. Computer labs may not be open or space may not be available at stressful times or crunch times. If you get up in the middle of the night you can put down what thoughts may come to mind.
