Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

The buildings on campus here at VCU are all unique in their own way. With lounge areas, meeting and event spaces, and food services, the University Student Commons is where students, faculty, and staff come together outside the classroom. After being renovated several years ago, it is modern and hip, whereas Cabell Library has more of an older vibe to it. Shafer Dining Hall, which opened to students in the fall of 2004, created a whole new level of what future buildings would look like on campus. The new building for the School of Business, Snead Hall, which opened January 2008, proved just that. With ram-head gargoyles on top of the building, it is truly a sight to see when driving or walking through campus.

The students here really enjoy the University Student Commons and Siegel Center gym. VCU is currently renovating Cary Street Gym which will re-open in 2010 with a swimming pool, multiple fitness rooms, multiple basketball courts, and even a climbing wall. VCU works hard to keep facilities clean for students and renovate buildings when needed. They also take note when additions need to be made to buildings, and in the summer of 2007, they opened a convenience store on the ground level of Grace E. Harris Hall that includes coffee, soups, fresh fruit, and a microwave for students to use.

Enjoyable Atmosphere

The facilities at Virginia Commonwealth University have improved since my older sister attended. The gym is new and is enjoyable to exercise in and the locker rooms are convenient as well because of the electronic locks. The library is large, peaceful to get work done, and easy to find books for projects. There is a large student commons and the food is good quality however I wish for a meal swipe you could get more for the money.

Facilities

There is a very big new gym that is nice, although I feel like it could have a few more machines (treadmills etc) because people often have to wait for them. The student center is okay but a bit dark and dated looking, I pass through it but I don't hang out there. Facilities at VCU in general range from new and nice, to older depending on your major. The Business school has a really nice new building but the English building is older. I wouldn't consider any of it bad, though.
