Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

While living in Richmond, students learn to become more aware of their surroundings, whether they are on campus or somewhere else in the city. VCU works hard to take the necessary precautions to ensure students’ safety on campus and around the local area. There are emergency call-box stations with blinking lights, located throughout campus and in parking decks, that connect directly with VCU Police. There is also an on-campus security escort service available daily from 5 p.m. to 8 a.m. Dorm security may seem like a pain to residents, but it is arguably one of the best dorm security systems in the state. A resident of a dorm must swipe and present his valid VCU ID to be admitted into their dorm. All guests must be signed in and give security a valid photo ID. These strict measures prevent strangers from coming into and leaving dorms as they please.

In Fall 2007, VCU implemented new forms of communication for emergencies, including sirens and an emergency text-messaging system. Students and parents are able to register their numbers with the system so that they will receive constant contact through their cell phones during an emergency. The VCU police force is staffed with 45 hourly and 17 full-time personnel in addition to its 84 sworn officers. Campus crimes are not typically major crimes, with vandalism and theft the most prevalent on and around campus.

Safety at VCU

VCU is known as an unsafe school. I have never had any trouble, but have heard multiple stories. There are VCU police phones located around campus and they send you text message notifications if anything has happened.

Be Aware

There are a lot of campus police surrounding the area so that makes me feel safe. Even though there are crimes, people need to be more aware of their surroundings. I pay attention, but sometimes it is scary because the campus is so large!

Very Safe

Richmond itself can be dangerous if you do not take precautions and go into the bad areas. However, the area around VCU is very safe and friendly, and the campus offers many services to ensure student and staff safety including hundreds of well lit emergency phones and a police escort service. The VCU police are a branch of the Richmond police and have the full athority and training of the law. I always feel safe and protected on campus and in the surrounding area.
