Quick Stats

School Slang
  • The “Stu”: The Siegel Center
  • Blackboard: The online message board for teachers and classmates to communicate with one another.
  • The C-Section: The section at the Alltel Pavilion where fans sit for the basketball games. It is located directly behind the TV announcers in the area of the yellow seats that have a “C” on them. Fans recently created this new student section along with season ticket holders.
  • GRTC: The Richmond bus system; the campus connector is part of GRTC.
  • Ram Bucks: Money on your VCU ID that acts as a debit card.
  • Reading Days: Days students get off to prepare for midterms or final exams. Often they’re used to go home or go on mini vacations.
  • Shafer: The dining hall. You often hear people say, “I’m going to Shafer.”
Things I Wish I Knew Before Coming To School
  • Buy textbooks online. It will save you a lot of money.
  • Get involved with the student clubs. There are so many different organizations to become a part of.
  • Leave your dorm room door open. People wander by, and it shows that you’re interested in whatever may be going on.
Tips to Succeed
  • Although your teachers may seem dull and boring in class, they can be one of your greatest resources. Get to know them so that, if you ever need a recommendation or advice on jobs, they will be more than happy to help you.
  • Ask the librarians for help when you’re researching something. They’re there to help you find resources for your papers.
  • Do not wait to study until the night before an exam. It will stress you out more, and you will end up going into the exam exhausted.
  • Get to know your classmates. They’ll be the ones to help you with make-up work if you miss class. Just be sure to do the same for them.
  • Go to class. Some days it may be hard, but the general rule is the more classes you attend, the better the outcome of your overall grade.
  • When teachers ask questions, don’t be afraid to answer them. It doesn’t make you look like a nerd, and the teacher could take participation into consideration when grading.

The Social Scene

The diversity of people at Virginia Commonwealth is ridiculous. I've met people from place I've never even heard of, for example: Cameroon and Bulgaria. Everyone also seems to get along especially during basketball season everyone was united. We all came together and supported our team by singing out loud in the streets to covering ourselves in the the school's colors: black and gold. You will also always find someone outside sharing their talent by playing some instrument it will always make you want to just sit there and enjoy. Monroe park is also surrounded by the dorms so it's a great place to just relax on the grass or play some Frisbee! Yet most of the amazing places like the museums, Belle Isle, and Hollywood Cemetery are a good 20 to 30 minute walk away from campus. It's worth the walk though.

Uniqueeeeee

I think my school is unique considering its one of the smaller or smallest campus's of all Virginia state universities. It is basically a less busier New York, because technically it isnt as thriving.

The Honors College

Being a member of the Honors College is a great experience. However, you must meet certain requirements to be accepted, you have to take specific Honors classes, and you must maintain at least a 3.5 GPA in order to graduate with honors. There are a lot of benefits for honors students, including an honors-only dorm and small class sizes (all honors classes have 20 or less students). Honors students get to register for classes earlier than other students and are encouraged to conduct research and present at various research conferences. There is a whole staff of people at the Honors College that are always ready to assist and advise students.
